It became kind of a running joke between those who think a moat would be a useful thing to have in a ZA scenarion and those who think it would be useless or even a bad idea. The moat discussion in the threads you have been reading has no direct bearing on the plot of the show.

You don't have to be bitten to become a Walker when you die. Which to me how did Herschel not know that if he had unbitten family members in the barn?

Herschel was saving Sophia for himself. If you had the original print of thecomic like I do, you'd see what kind of a man Herschel really is.
