Vernon Roger

Apparently yesterday would have been news guy Vernon Roger's birthday. I did a little Googling on him and now I'm curious. Anyone here have anything to share about him?

Liked to wear diapers.

On another note, who knows what he used to say at the end of his cooking segments? And the translation?

He would say something like this:

"MMMMMMMMMMM MM! Tonnez ami c'est ci bon oui"

I don't speak Cajun French, so I could never make it out. TIA.

Hey Lucky, I just found my copy of his cookbook and it says in the intro "I hope they'll elicit the same response they did for me - 'TONNAIRE, MAIS CAS C'EST BONNE, OUI!!!'"
I speak France French, and can tell you (a) 'cas' should be spelled as ca, and 'bonne' as bon, and (b) it means something like 'thunder, but that is good, yes.'

So he killed himself? Wow. What exactly happened? I remember hearing about his DWIs when I was little but the other stuff... ????

After he got fired from WAFB he openned a restaurant in the same shopping center as Buffalo Wild Wings on the corner of Bluebonnet and Perkins.

He was fired after the BR madam got busted and some of the names of her customers came out. And yeah he was into some different stuff.

Google is indeed full of information.

Wow is all I can say. I barely remember the guy being on air but wow... I feel terrible for his family and co-workers

Wasn't he married to Diane Deaton (?), the petite (older) weather woman on WAFB?

All I remember about his death was that it came out that he'd been with hookers and killed himself not too long after his world started crashing down. Sad.

He was a drunk. I remember watching the morning show shortly after the story about his indiscretions broke. He walked onto the set, on the air, with a huge bouquet of flowers and presented them to her. The expression on her face was priceless--astonishment and absolute rage. She tried not to show it, but she looked like she wanted to kill him with them.

Yeah, French is a tad different in Louisiana than it is in France or Canada.
Vernon Roger had problems with the bottle and his kinky sex life. He was a good cook and had a going restaurant when he opted out of life. I saw him at a seafood market in Baton Rouge once and he was very unfriendly. He was a head case.

yeah .. he was an alcoholic and whore monger that got caught up in the sylvia landry stuff ... she had written down, in detail, the sordid things she and her girls would do with clients .. ole vern liked to don a pair of huggies and be on the receiving end of #2 to the chest ... he actually went to trial and diane deaton was devastated .. after he was acquitted thanks to his lame "i am an alcoholic" defense, channel 9 couldn't fire him .. in fact, they had to pay for his treatment ... well, he relapsed and they let him go .. i believe he had gotten a DWI in the middle of the day ... deaton divorced him and, as others have mentioned, he opened a restaurant ... the black cloud of all of that shite followed him and his place wasn't really well supported at all ... he wound up killing himself and leaving a suicide note for deaton ...

i had a friend that was literally at channel 9 finishing the editing of his company's commercial when he said mike graham walked in to tell everyone he had killed himself ... he had selected deaton to do his voice over and she was in the room too ... he said she appeared to not give a shite at all and went right back to work finishing his commercial ... he says he'll never forget that ..

Didn't he make a U-Turn at a DWI checkpoint and they chased him down?

I knew Vernon pretty well, as a co-worker.

Here's what I can tell you about him:

He was a lot more skilled at delivering the news than most people give him credit for. The guy had legit anchoring skills and understanding of the news that a lot of on-air folks these days just don't have.

He was an amazing cook, and very generous and willing to share what he knew when it came to cooking.

He was passionate about being from Louisiana and showing others the best things about Cajun culture.

As a person interacting with others, he was frequently abrasive and not very tolerant of other points of view. He was a difficult person to work with.

He absolutely could not control his addictions. Totally powerless against them. His behavior made it embarassing to say that I worked with him.

He threw away a marriage with an amazing woman who any of you would be lucky to have married. Diane is an unbelievably gracious person.

His death was totally unsurprising. To be honest, when I found out... I wasn't all that sad. Kind of indifferent. But as years go by and I learn more about life and people and the shite they go through, it saddens me more. I don't know if anything could have been done to save Vernon. I don't think anything would have worked, honestly. I think that's what saddens me most about it.
