Also the proliferation of Internet sites like rotten tomatoes/here, social media, and the oh so many armchair critics with their blogs and youtube channels.

Use to be that you either read a few reviews in a newspaper/magazine/tv or simply heard word-of-mouth from friends.

People were a lot more willing to take chances on films they might be iffy on. They relied a lot more on their own opinions than some percentage rating they read on the Internet or some joe nobody's youtube review.

Yes, we are on the right track. Keep it going folks and squeeze these bastards out.

I think generally though people have stopped going to movies that are clearly half-assed money grabs because those movies are bad and because its expensive to go to the movies.

I think they pretty much make Transformers for the China market. If I remember correctly the last 3 movies haven't done well in the U.S. but killed in China.

Nope sorry it's all politics. That's why no one saw Wonder Woman after Chris Pine was so anti-trump.

Used to be people said: Ebert and Siskel gave it two thumbs up!

But there's no reason Hollywood shouldn't be raking in the dough despite home theater and TV alternatives.

Hollywood used to make bank when 3 movies would sit at your local cinema for 6 months. I mean, how many times can you see Clash of the Titans?

Theaters are flooded with movies that should draw viewers based on REAL choices.

But the problem is, despite the multi-plexis the last 20 years...REAL choices have diminished steadily over the years.

It's the same movies flooded in 4 screens at your local theater...and another same 3 movies take up the other side.

All I hear from people is complaints about how there's nothing to watch anymore unless you are one of those people who stares at their iphone all day in the theater.

Hollywood has conditioned people to only watch franchise movies. Non franchise movies don't get a lot of hype. They've gotten lazy and started putting out crappy movies thinking people would see it based on name alone.

To show you what kind of year we're having, the frontrunners for Best Picture right now (on some sites) are Wonder Woman, Logan, Planet of the Apes, and Get Out.

I get your point, but is not even September yet. It's pretty rare to have more than 1 or 2 best picture nominees that came out before then. This year Dunkirk will be the one that gets the nom

Too true, and really everything we are all saying are just small pieces of the puzzle that has us where we are now at the theaters.

I think in 97, I watched at the theater around 80 of the top 100 grossing movies that year, which was a crazy good year with a wide variety of successful films across all genres:

Titanic
As Good as it Gets.
Air Force One
Good Will Hunting
Men in Black
Tomorrow Never Dies
My Best Friend's Wedding

That's just some of the top 10. Compare that to today, and with the exception of B&B and Get Out, all the top movies so far are either franchise films or animated kid movies. Films like AGAIG and GWH would be minor successes at best in today's market.

Edit: Of course back in 1997, $20 could get you into 4 movies over the course of the day.

Junior year of high school. Would skip school and go watch 4 movies in a day. Add in that citiplace and tinsel town had recently opened, spent a lot of time at the theaters on dates or just going out on the weekend.

Age of Extinction was the last one. There's over $100 million drop off between it and The Last Knight.

Well...when you're the head of a family of four, and you spend $50 on movie tickets, and an additional $30+ on concessions, you want your movie experience to be worth it. The cost of going to the movies has driven us to the point of trusting some stranger's opinion.

I remember as a teenager back in the early-00s how it only cost $6.50 to attend an evening showing. Ticket prices have more than doubled since then.

And no studio would dare take a chance on a film like Titanic in today's market.

I think that this is the ongoing result of films becoming more available for cheaper in other areas. This has little to nothing to do with Hollywood being political.

Show me on the doll where Hollywood touched you.

It's adorable that you think that mass amounts of people didn't go see movies because "Hollywood" is divisive. You want that to be the case so bad, but it's not.

Are there people out there who boycott Hollywood? Yes. Do those people translate to an insane amount of people staying home from the theater? Probably not. It's far, far more likely to be because it's cheaper and easier to watch these films elsewhere.

It's just one or two movies a week. I've done more than that some years with the MoviePass membership.

I remember a few years ago, I went to the movies almost every weekend. I didn't work on Fridays, so I would go to the early afternoon feature. Now, I go about once a month. It also has to do with the fact that I'm married now and have to pay for two, but the movie that have come out recently haven't interested me that much.

2017 will probably end up making just as much as previous years

It
The Lego Ninjago Movie
Kingman 2
Blade Runner 2049
Thor:Ragnarok
Justice League
Coco
Star Wars:The Last Jedi
Pitch Perfect 3
The Greatest Showman

All those movies have a chance to make a lot of money at the box office. It will be a record breaking winter, and all will be well in Hollywood, and thats not even counting the smaller movies that could be breakout hits.
