How can I connect my tv to ceiling mount speakers directly (no receiver)? Do I just need a small amp or is there more to it?

Not as tech savvy as some, but I don’t see a way of accomplishing that without a receiver to wire the speakers to. Maybe someone on the tech board has a better answer.

Before we further are you talking about just front left and right speakers or are we talking about more speakers, if so how many total?

If just 2 speakers you can probably do it with a small 2 channel amp that has Stereo Line In for like $40-$50.
Maybe less.

You could do it with a little class D amp for under $30 if the speakers are relatively sensitive and the line out from the TV has volume control in the TV. $40 if you need to control the volume at the amp ie an amp with a remote. Both these assume the TV has RCA outputs if it only has a digital output then the price will jump to the point a cheap 5.1 receiver will make more sense.

its just a pair of 8 inch, ceiling mount, 120 watt passive speakers. The TV has both RCAs and an optical port. I'm tossing out an old, broken home theater/bluray player and dont want to replace it.
I'm looking at some stereo 2 channel amps with bluetooth so we can use the speakers for music when we're not watching TV.
The current plan is: [TV]>>RCA>>[AMP]>>speaker wire>>[Speakers]
My questions are: Will it work (both TV speakers and additional speakers working together)? Will I be able to control the volume with the TV remote? Will a 2x100 watt amp work with 120 watt speakers?
Have no clue about any of this stuff, so any help is appreciated.

That is the correct setup. Whether or not the TV will control the volume is the question. It likely will but you will have to change the audio setup via the menu. Without getting granular a 2x100 amp will work fine with "120 w" speakers. The speaker rating is how much they can handle without frying. Any "cheaper" 2 x 100 amp won't be able to put out 100 clean watts per channel most likely closer to 25w. There is also the impedance issue where the amp may be rated at 4 ohms so it will cut the power in half if the speakers you have are nominal 8-ohm speakers.
In general any 2x100 amp or even lower powered will work fine as long as the TV can be configured to control the volume on the RCA outputs. If you are looking at spending anything close to $100 I would just get a cheap 2 channel receiver like a Sony STRDH190 which has Bluetooth and will ensure you have volume control.

I did some reading and I dont think the TV remote will control the volume, so thanks for the recommendation on the Sony.
The amps I had been looking at were in thr 50-70 range, so its not much more.

FYI if you are trying to go cheap here is an example of a "receiver" that would work and it has Bluetooth and a remote for $41.
Amazon
Now I personally wouldn't buy it unless I was on a super tight budget because in the audio community Pyle is a pile...but that is among enthusiasts. I would instead buy a basic 2 channel receiver from Sony, Denon, Yamaha or Onkyo. The Sony I mentioned can be found now for $100 which makes it the cheapest of what I would recommend. It is on sale at Best Buy (dunno how long the sale lasts) for $50 off to give you the $100 price. It is available for pickup today in BR and also with free shipping.
