I just smile when my younger friends cry about boomers going to 1970's parties in black face and dressed like Native Americans. Twenty years from now, all of these guys who participated in the Red Dress Run will get outed for appropriating trans culture. Who knows if cooking Chinese food will someday be appropriation or if naming your dog Jefferson will make you a slavery enthusiast.

That may or may not be true. One of the running jokes we had on our submarine in the late 1990's was that, based on music/movie trends, it would be physically impossible for our kids to get offended.

Turns out, that era (Kid's born in the mid 70's-early 80's) produced possibly the least "offended" group in the past century, and the kids younger than that would start to become progressively more offended at stuff, after what was then a 50 year string of becoming less offended at stuff, with the Boomers starting to chip away at the Hays code that Silents/Greatest Gen had largely been ok with.

The narrative that The Searchers is racist is so overplayed. No shite, Ethan is portrayed as a virulent racist. The movie makes no bones about it. People don't need for the movie to be explained.

Unless they want to complain about white actors playing Natives or that the Natives kidnap little white girls - well guess what, the movie is based in reality and on the Captivity of the Oatman girls. (As in the film Lucy and Debbie are taken captive, same with Olive and Mary Ann in real life.)

In 1851, while traveling from Illinois to California with a company of Mormon Brewsterites, the family was attacked by a small group from a Native American tribe. Though she identified them as Apache, they were most likely Tolkepayas (Western Yavapai).

They clubbed many to death, left her brother Lorenzo for dead, and enslaved Olive and her younger sister, Mary Ann.

Micky Rooney, a white guy, is playing the stereo-typical Asian man. Buck teeth, his clothes, and the way he talks. It's basically Japanese black face, similar to a lot of the portrayals of Native Americans by white people in old westerns.



His scenes are him telling her to stop beeping his apartment to get someone to buzz her into the building. She's doing it because she lost her key. It's supposed to be funny that she repeatedly buzzes his apt. to get back in the building. He stands upstairs, bitching at her for doing it, and she ignores him, and more importantly, what he says.

I never thought about it offending anyone until I saw Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story in 1993, and the guy playing Bruce brings it up. I never thought it was funny, and don't think it added anything to the movie. I guess they were trying to give the hicks a taste of what cosmopolitan New York City apartment living was like in 1961.

Someone tell me how Psycho is supposed to be "offensive"...

Besides being a horror film. Dude was a creep. Is that offensive now?
