Marty is not involved. People can quit it with that. The creator of the show came out and said that people are reading too far into things and speculating too far afield. He said that viewers shouldn't expect to be betrayed or tricked as an audience.

Marty is just a good-ol-boy. Former baseball star, former cowboy, skirt chaser. He's not deep, he isn't interested in esoteric cult-like mumbo-jumbo. Not his style. Are there contradictions between his Christian talk and benevolence toward less-fortunate women and his womanizing and philandering? Yes. But that describes a whooooooooooooole lot of guys. Doesn't make him a killer.

Until I see it on Sunday night, I believe Marty is more than a skirt chasing big dick good ole boy. I believe Rust is investigating him and will until I see contradictory evidence.

I just don't think that the "Marty is involved" crew have any evidence to support their theory. And I reread your posts, and still don't think you have posted anything other than speculation. I am as lost as anybody with where we are going with this show, but I don't see any support other than hoping to be right about some crazy, unsubstantiated theory.

There's no support for it at all. In fact there's support against it. The guy who wrote the show advised the viewers that it's intended to be more straight-forward than people are theorizing/anticipating.

I'm telling you, it's going to be a deal where a cabal of rich and powerful residents of the region have formed a Bohemian Grove of sorts, except that they do real sacrifices instead of pretending. Sort of like what the rumors around the whole Penn State/ Sandusky thing say was really going on up there in Pennsylvania. Look into the DA from up there who was investigating the Sandusky thing years ago and disappeared - forever. Something happens, likely to Marty's girl, that makes them realize that Ledoux wasn't THE guy. For one reason or another - likely because they hit a wall of obstruction in trying to investigate it through official channels - Rusty has to go underground, which is his forte, in order to continue his investigation without police sanction.

That would be interesting, because when he's talking about the way his daughter died, he's really vague. He says they lived on a curve in the road, and his daughter was riding her tricycle in the driveway. Then he kind of just stops describing the scene. We assume that she got hit by a car but he never says that.

I've been thinking this also. This took place in Texas. She could have been snatched by the biker gang as payment for Ledoux or some shite leading Rust to go Narc which leads him to the gang and eventually a Louisiana connection which then leads him to request his assignment with LPD. It's a longshot but whatever.

Has anyone picked up on the fact that the name Rust Cohle is an anagram for "Chore Slut?"

Marty could've very well allowed him to be the errand boy, as he plays the big dick puppet master behind the scenes. Something to think about.

I don't need to adhere to societies idea of structure and or norms to post my musings on the depth of layers or eccentricities of True Detective. #DickSwagger.

I happen to like run-ons so I too think you don't need to adhere to societies idea of structure and or norms to post your musings on the depth of layers or eccentricities of True Detective while talking about her being snatched by the biker gang as payment for Ledoux or some shite leading Rust to go Narc which leads him to the gang and eventually a Louisiana connection which then leads him to request his assignment with LPD.

I think Rust and Marty are who we think they are in the show. Marty a typical old school good ole boy who is a decent detective and Rust, a intense and deep thinking undercover cop. Rust knows to much and has gotten the way he is because of the work he has done undercover. We see this as he does the job with the biker group.

Both lie, but the only giant lie was the way Ledroux was killed. Mostly because Marty saw a dead kid and another still alive, so he freaked. Yes it was bad to lie but anyone would have done the same. "The case is done" but Rust never removes himself from it after finding out that they got the wrong guy. Marty goes back to being his old self after it all. Both have that understanding of backing each other up on the incident regardless of how they feel about each other.

There is a cult which Rust is closing in on and knows way more than what he is telling so far. He's piecing it together for the ultimate frick you at the end of the season.

Somehow that cult group is involved with kids because everything is dealing with either a school or young girls.

Tl;dr Marty and Rust are not involved with murders, there is a cult. Rust closing in on them. Marty continues his old way of life. Rust gonna save the day

Eta this sums it up much better LINK

Thing is that the true killer is not known and will not be known if ever until the end.

Cooter,

I think you're dead on. Nic Pizzolatt said that everything we need to solve the case is right in front of us the first two episodes. That's in-line with the rich cult theory.

Unrelated, but I just read that all in Woody Harrelson's voice.

Has anyone picked up on the fact that Rust Cohle is an anagram for "short clue". The killer could be a midget that we missed...because he is so short!
