It's Blompcamp(sp) what do you expect. His movies are about the white devil holding brown people back. Pretty much everyone on earth besides Damon was of some ethnic background and everybody on Elysium was white or Asian. He is not subtle at all in his agenda.

Most political commentary from any South African who grew up during the civil unrest from apartheid refers in some way to ethnic relations. Blomkamp is no different. It is just the dominate social issue in that part of the world.

I don't think the movie was so much about the rich being the evil ones just for being rich as it was about the rich hoarding the resources, which is an extremely common trait throughout human history.

In District 9, all humans were the evil ones, especially the black Africans. He got A LOT of heat from the Nigerian and black African population for that movie.

The only reason I don't want to watch it

Watching the previews made me partial to the "bad guys"

If Eminem was cast as the main character, movie woulda been tolerable.

Copely's performance makes the movie worth seeing. I knew the film had some baggage along with it, and enjoyed it regardless. I just tried not to take it so seriously.

Am I the only one that sided with the citizens of Elysium and not the illegals trying to break into their private property and take what isn't theirs? I wanted Matt Damon to fail so badly.

ETA: That is not a spoiler as that was the premise in the trailer.

I was flying from JFK to Seattle last week and this was one of the movies playing on the plane (free since the plan was 30 minutes late... I loves me some JetBlue!) and could only watch a few minutes of it without getting bored shitless. To clarify, this movie was so bad that even on a 6.5 hour trans-continental flight I found it too boring to watch.

But but but... Mandela enabled such social change! Gotta break some eggs to make an omelette!
