Finally got to see this last night. Extremely powerful. My only criticism was the over reliance on classical music for "epic effect".

I thought the music was amazing, particularly John Tavener's "Funeral Canticle"

Yeah, I actually liked the music. I understand may have seemed overly dramatic to someone, but that's Malick.

My critique is not that it was overly dramatic, but that it behaved a bit as a crutch.

Are you anywhere near BR? If so, where did you see it?

Nope, sorry I live in a real city.

I joke only because I am from BR.

It was playing at Cinemark in Perkins Rowe a few weeks ago.

Hmm. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what you mean here.

Do you mean that the music held up more film than it should have?

I think in our culture the type of classical music used has an ingrained religiosity, so to speak. It just seemed a bit of a cliche choice for such an original movie. As if the music was attempting to direct me how to feel. Now one could make an argument that that is how music is used in film and they would be partly right, but I don't expect or want convention with Malick.

very good movie. very thought provoking. excellent visuals and music.

different from what malick is known for with longer shots but you still know it's his work.

I understand what you mean, but film scores (good ones, not cheesy ones) really can help drive a narrative or create mood. I don't think a score is any substitute for good writing, directing, etc, but it can add a lot. Somehow, in this case, it's hard for me to think of those extended interludes in Tree of Life were "conventional". In the hands of a lesser filmmaker they could have been terrible.

In each his films Malick has used very few tracks throughout the duration. Just saying.

While my father was nowhere near the guy that "Father" was, some of it hit a little close to home. I might need to not talk to him this week.

Also really wishing I would have seen this movie before the OT "my son smoked pot and i beat his arse" thread. That guy could have definitely used a recommendation to see this movie.

Yeah I commented on that. The kid was honest and got his arse whipped. That'll teach him.
