Lots of great ones mentioned. In no particular order:

Unforgiven
High Noon
High Plains Drifter

Wild Bunch could replace one of them. There Will Be Blood too, if that counts.

I mean Lonesome Dove is the best of all time - not just westerns but movies period imo.

But sticking to the rules:

Unforgiven is great but kinda depressing
Good the Bad and Ugly is probably my favorite of the Spaghetti Westerns
True Grit the Jeff Bridges version

But these are just off the top of my head. Really like Outlaw Josey Wales, The Cowboys, Searchers, Open Range, Jeremiah Johnson and a million more.

How about best modern western?

Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
No Country for Old Men
Last Picture Show

And I must say I got the Red River Criterion a few years ago...

You have to like early Western fables to love this this movie...

Action, drama, comedy...typical era picture.

Red River loses out in the Top 3 because it tries to be everything.

But if we had Top 10 - it's easily in. It's just such a fun classic Western. It's just entertaining as hell.

Thats not even a good movie let alone a Great Western.

Driving in a Stage Coach and wearing Buffalo hides does not a Western make.

Considering the dialogue is about more modern and more raunch than even today's standards. It's really a stretch to make it a Western...because it doesn't carry the time period at all.

It's Resovior Dogs with Bison coats.

74% critic score, 76% audience score, but some random guy online thinks it’s a bad movie:

Conagher is one of the best westerns ever. If you have not seen it, please do so immediately. One of L'Amour's best

Anyone like 3:10 to Yuma enough to have it ranked up there?
