I'm trying to power through and it's just hard to believe that after some of these scenes the director said "Cut!!!! We got it!!!" Between this and The Little Things I think HBO might need to regroup on these original movies

This was not good. I’m going to rewatch when I don’t have a crying baby in the living room with me, but I don’t think it will change my opinion on it.

Some good acting, but that shite was all over the place. Terrible move to try to cram all of that into an hour and 45 minutes. Terrible terrible move.

If they really wanted to do something and call it a Sopranos prequel, use “The Crown” method. Take 4 decades, 60-90’s leading up to Jackie dying, and have 4 12 or 13 episode seasons set in those decades. That opens it up for a TON of great opportunities.

But honestly, I think we’re probably in a place now where David Chase and Allen Taylor are past their creative primes. Matthew Weiner might could make a go of it, and do it justice.

This was weak arse shite.

That was a letdown
It should have been a series to properly develop these characters
And the one scene with Carmela sucked

The movie was far from horrible.

Weiner was a big part of the Sopranos in later seasons as I recall and showed his chops with Mad Men. Thing is movies are different than series, so could he make the change of disciplines?

Obviously Chase couldn't.

Frankly, I think part of the reason they released this on HBOMax concurrent with the release in theaters is they know it's a piece of shite. Can claim the poor box office is due to people watching at home.

Without the Sopranos tie in and related publicity no one would care about this movie. It's just bad.

I’d be interested to see your thoughts if you follow through with this.

I loved the movie. It was everything I hoped for. I believe The movie is enjoyable if you watched the series as it unfolded.

Not trying to be that guy, but The Sopranos changed TV. No way it can be duplicated today. You would have to have never streamed a series. Then watch one episode a week…for 8 years! Take 8 months off from the show each year and start again with a new season. And all the while have zero content other than movies and sports.

It's like they just HAD to have an appearance by all the main players in the series.

Zero need to show young Carmela if it's just to show young Carmela. Which is what it was.

Man, does this whole black storyline have any bearing on The Sopranos? Don’t they have enough black shows and remakes now?

I’m saying have Weiner be the show runner for a Sopranos by decades prequel. Not the movie. Movie was a terrible idea and I doubt anyone could have pulled it off.

The story and the plot were bad enough but I couldn't get over how bad the script, acting, and editing were. Vera Farmiga was about the only one who didn't seem completely out of their element and even she was made up to be some half Livia half Carmela caricature of something I can't figure out. I see why all those movies and TV shows use the same Italian actors over and over because it's absolutely cringy hearing "madone!" from an NYU upper westside cracker named Corey

It is. It's also very difficult to impersonate another actor's mannerisms for a character. Junior, Sil, Paulie were all hard to take seriously.

And Gandolfini's son? Way too soft for the role. Tony Soprano didn't get to the top like that.

This was about as necessary as the Breaking Bad sequel movie.

I had fairly low expectations for this, and it didn't exceed them.

Sopranos is the GOAT. Sometimes you just gotta leave well enough alone.

Junior didn't come across as Italian at all.

This movie was using the Sopranos name for a something that’s as much about black racial issues than the Sopranos. What fabricated bullshite.

Are you saying the the civil rights moment in the 60’s didn’t have an impact on how Tony viewed the blacks?

If they didn’t touch on the race riots while Tony was growing up, it would have been an huge mistake.

Given where we are as a society, are you surprised?

The original Sopranos could not be made today.

I got downvoted to oblivion awhile back when I said the same thing about the Office. Sure enough now some scenes and episodes are being deleted as ‘too offensive’.

Are you serious?! Racial issues were way worse when this movie was set than today. Imagine a mob guy’s wife sleeping with a black gangster 50 years ago.
