I think he was far from horrible on Deadwood, and I certainly wouldnt say his performance should deter you from watching it.
He wasnt a very likable character IMO. Everyone knew he was full of shite with all his self righteousness. I'd name 10 people who I liked in the series before I may get to Bullock.

I think the character was just totally flat on Deadwood.
But damn, Olyphant never emoted except to snarl.

He was great in Deadwood.

The show called for Seth Bullock to be angry. 99% of the time. SO guess what? Olyphant acted angry, 99% of the time.

He did a great job of playing a very complex character.

I thought once he acted opposite McShane, he would be exposed next to someone who chews scenery like bubble gum. He held his own though, and any scene with those two was always good.

You sir are a knee biter, a real Arthur Dent!
if you were any more wrong you would loop back to being right.

This thread has me pumped for a series rewatch now. I'm up til 2-3 a.m. Every night, and just decided to pull an Entourage rewatch over the Christmas holidays with my kid, who hasn't seen it yet. Watching Ian McShane on AHS started to give me the Deadwood rewatch itch too.

was pretty much the lifeblood of the series.

Olyphant seems to have a pretty good comedic ability. I think for him to play such a complex hard arse with the world put directly on his shoulders speaks to his performance. I would also agree that his scenes with McShane are fantastic and are a main component in moving the series along the different story lines.
