It’s been a few years since I watched The Wire and with this being the 20th anniversary of Season 1 seems like the perfect time for a rewatch.
Finished S1 last night and it still holds up so well. The character and story development are so well done, truly a masterpiece.

I was trying to look for things I didn’t catch or discuss much during previous watches. 1 thing that stood out that I have over looked before is how involved Levy is with the organization. He’s not just a slick defense lawyer on retainer advising them to launder money but more like a consigliere. He flat out tells them to “take care” of the security lady that lied for them to spring Dee. Wish they had explored his character more in later seasons. McNulty was spot on when he tears into Perlman about how all the lawyers are afraid to piss off anyone and challenge someone like Levy because they all want to advance in their careers.
Speaking of McNulty he so deserves to get shipped out at the end of the season it’s one thing to defy the bosses to bring in a case, going behind Rawls when he wants to file murder charges on D when the cases are weak, but man cuts his own throat calling them out to their faces but bringing the case to the Feds, who he knows are not doing drug cases, who tell the detail they are only interested in political corruption and then getting mad and personally attacking the US Attorney and his boy Fitz when they say they will use Avon/Stringer to get Clay Davis or s so stupid. For that alone he should ride the boat

I love Season 1. It's the simplest plot but so gripping. Doesn't take long to realize that it's not your typical cops & robbers show.

Did a rewatch in 2020 and when Kimas undercover stunt goes horribly wrong… that’s when the show just took off . It was a slow burn up until then in season 1

It’s a really underrated scene, it’s similar to when Jimmy tried to disguise his car accident. Natural police think differently but all guys think the same in those situations.
