The Winds of War (1983) and War and Remembrance (1988) TV miniseries...

I just finished re-watching both The Winds of War and its sequel War and Remembrance back-to-back, and they still hold up as one of the most ambitious and powerful TV projects ever made. Together they clock in at nearly 40 hours, but every minute feels worth it.

These two miniseries, adapted from Herman Wouk's massive novels, follow the Henry family - centered around Navy commander Victor "Pug" Henry (played by the great Robert Mitchum) - and the connected Jastrow family as they get swept up in the storm of World War II. It starts in the tense months leading up to the war in 1939, takes you through the outbreak of fighting, Pearl Harbor, and then dives deep into the full global conflict right up to its dramatic end in 1945.

What makes them so special is how they weave personal stories of love, family struggles, duty, and heartbreak together with the real history of the war. You'll travel the world with these characters: from Berlin and London to the Pacific, North Africa, and the darkest corners of occupied Europe. You see major historical events and figures up close, but always through the eyes of believable people whose lives are forever changed by the chaos around them. It's part sweeping family saga, part gripping war drama, with romance, political intrigue, naval battles, and some incredibly moving and unflinching moments.

These are truly epic and sprawling in the best way possible. They were both shot on location across multiple continents with a huge cast, incredible production values for the time, and a scope that feels more like a 40-hour feature film than a TV show. The Winds of War sets the stage with the gathering storm, while War and Remembrance delivers the full fury of the war itself, and together they paint one of the most complete portraits of WWII I've ever seen on screen.

If you love big historical dramas like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, or even something with the grand sweep of War and Peace, this is the ultimate binge. Yes, it's a serious time commitment, but once you start, it's hard to stop. The performances (Mitchum is rock-solid, and there are standout turns all around), the attention to historical detail, and the emotional depth make it incredibly rewarding.
