Any reason to bring up South Park is a good reason.

I like The Patriot too not sure why it gets so much hate, ok that's not true actually I am sure... It's because it's Mel Gibson and the theme is pro-American.

While I can understand someone being entertained by the movie, its just not very good. Production values are good, but its a mess otherwise. Cheesy, melodramatic, terribly scripted and acted...I really hate this movie, but to each his own I guess.

I love tons of Mel's movies and I am about as Pro-American as it gets...
And I think this movie is a piece of shite. So...

I was moderately drunk when I wrote that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting it in my top 20, I just think its one of the movies that people over critique the hell out of.

+1.
It wasn't Mel or the theme that made this movie suck; it was the unintentional cheese, predictable melodrama, and forced Hollywood sentimentalism. The movie is fun to watch but dumb as shite. How many cliches can you fit into a summer blockbuster?

Yeah that's what all the anti-American Mel Gibson haters say...

I thought it was terrible...and it's treatment in the book we both read didn't help its standing.

Add on the fact that Mel Gibson wasn't a Patriot of any kind...
He just did what he did because his son got killed by Over The Top Historically Inaccurate Evil British Guy (OTTHIEBG for short) and he wanted revenge.

Some more anti-american reviews:
The main irony, of course, lies in the film's title, which suggests that the absurdly flag-waving activist should be taken at face value despite the ample evidence that defending his country is the last thing on his mind.
It repeats the formula of exclusionary representation, conceiving American history as the domain of whites, where blacks, free and slave are left on the sidelines, local color for more 'heroic' characters.
A typical Hollywood product that aims to get the adrenaline rushing and tug at the heartstrings, but doesn't much care about how shamelessly it goes about doing so.
The next time Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich decide to crank out another of their manipulative popcorn epics, I hope they'll stick to aliens and giant lizards and leave our history alone.
The film feels preachy, hollow, and -- in its celebratory staging of violence -- flatly hypocritical.
By the time Martin begins waving around a gigantic American flag to rally his supporters for one last clash, the film has become so mechanical and jingoistic you might just as well be watching "Declaration of Independence Day."
If I'd known there was going to be this much gagging sentimentality, I'd have brought a vomit bag.

can anyone answer why is Braveheart so critically acclaimed, but the Patriot is not?
they share a lot of the same qualities

It shouldn't be. Although it is nominally better, I think it's really starting to lose steam as time goes by.

I always took it as Ledger's character as being The Patriot. Not Mel's.
It's a fun popcorn movie. I enjoy it.
