Just saw the movie.

It's amazing that they could combine old footage, new actors with cgi faces, new characters and numerous references to a 40 year old movie and have it done seamlessly, while providing a coherent, entertaining story that kicked arse on an emotional level and with some of the greatest action scenes I've ever seen.

It's about as perfect as it could have been.

I loved it.

I've always thought Forest Whitaker is a horrible actor and he takes me out of everything he's in.

From Forbes....

quote:

Well, the last stop on the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story train has departed, with the Walt Disney blockbuster opening in China yesterday. The film snagged a relatively "okay” $10.3 million opening day, including $460,000 in midnight previews. That’s a lot less than any number of somewhat recent “big” Hollywood opening days, including Spectre ($15 million), Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation ($18m), Doctor Strange ($12.9m) and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ($11.2m). To wit, we’re probably looking at a $30-$35m opening weekend, which isn’t exactly a top-flight debut for one of the biggest franchises around.

If Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which (for what it’s worth) features Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen among its ensemble unit (Felicity Jones, Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn are the leads), follows the recent pattern of not very leggy theatrical runs in China, we’re probably looking at an opening weekend of around $30-$35 million and a final Chinese gross of around $60-$80m.

Pretty weak numbers for China, would be even lower than TFA.

I expected it to be such. Star Wars just isn't popular around there, particularly since they more identify with the Empire's philosophy thanks to Chairman Mao. It hits a bit close to home for them.

The only reason TFA did as well as it did in China is the Chinese were curious what the big fuss was about back in America about Star Wars, since they know that is our favorite franchise. And they didn't care for it. I see no reason why they'd give it a second chance.

frick the Chinese comin' straight from the underground.
Dumb Commies hatin us cuz Trump ain't ...no clown.

Seriously, I have to question whether China would share the actual box office numbers anyway...it can't be politically savvy to openly support an American Juggernaut. But you're right, SW has never been there what it is here. Even in it's original heyday.

i think im done with Star Wars. theyve been reduced to a fat cash cow with 0 effort put into dialogue, character development, or any writing for that matter. cgi snoozefests not indifferent from transformers and the like. the supporting characters were AWFUL. nobody gave a frick when any of them died. poor forrest whitaker...it was hard not to laugh at how bad he was. poor donnie yen, great actor with a shite role and shite writing. my love for felicity blinds me from any objective analysis of her acting, but she was definitely a step above the rest. her and K2 were the only characters i liked. i couldnt name a single one of the rest. forgettable score, forgettable main villain, and a wasted Mads...smh

LOL at cgi tarkin and carrie fisher. at least she only appeared for 5 seconds. they kept showing Tarkin and it completely took me out of it.

LOL at the scene when all the rebels argue about whether to go or not. any scene where everyone is at a table arguing and they each say one sentence is terrible. i dont think any movie will ever get this right.

i see yall blasted OML for saying it had an ethnic cast for SJW pandering, and he is absolutely correct. a white, a black, a mexican, 2 chinese, and a pakistani. if you wanna deny, go look up Cognitive Dissonance

that darth vader scene tho...dear god that was awesome. when his lightsaber ignited i was going apeshit deep inside.

the adjusted rankings

new hope

That's exactly how I felt afterwards. Hopefully Episode VIII is great.

I mean the Pakistani guy everyone treats him as an incompetent arse, but really he does nothing. When you first meet a character in a jail cell or being tortured, you expect the guy to be eccentric in some of way. But he's simply there with no character to say speak of typically reserved for the Scotty character. How much better would that role have been if it was filled by a drunk comedic actor?

I wish they would've just cut Whitaker out entirely. That was an awful, awful character.

yeah i have no clue how a character gets written and performed like that, much less included in the final cuts. a competent editor wouldve thrown that out in the first round of cuts

Apparently you were the only other person to see this because I got attacked swiftly for saying this

Also, when every character in your movie dies, and I feel no emotion... well, you've probably done a terrible job developing your characters.

Finally watched it. Loved it. The beach scene battle was beautiful.
