That storyline was great and didn't last long enough. The ending was poorly handled to IMO.

What were they supposed to do? He was leaving the show.

I'm only upvoting this part.

But not this part. I always figured that the writers never intended Holly to come back. However, once Steve Carell said he was leaving the show, the writers figured that this would be a good exit story. That is my theory anyways.

Na they definitely planned for her to come back. Why she was mentioned at the end of the prior season, why she came back in the picnic, etc.

I agree though that they should have had Michael's wedding. Instead of abruptly leaving, they should have gotten married with friends and family in Scranton then announced the news.

Their Slumdunder Mifflinaire skit is probably a Top 5 of All Time Office Cringeworthy moment

Actually they knew he was always going to leave after seven. Holly was just planted to be the reason they could turn to. Why they hired Amy Ryan to appear throughout season 5 through 7 to build up to that.

But would ruin his arch. Holly made micheal not need the attention he always wanted. Micheal wanted parties for the most outrageous things because of his need for attention and to be liked. That's why he lied about the day he was leaving.

They didn’t have to send Holly back to the other branch and have her start dating the other guy. I would have rather they’d found a way to keep her in Scranton from her initial arrival until Michael left the show.

I thought it was absolutely perfect. Michael devoted his life to Dunder Mifflin. When he found Holly he devoted his life to her. His time at the office was over. It was the perfect end to his character in my opinion and it showed great growth and depth to Michael Scott.

And Jim's goodbye is easily Jim's best moment on the show. So was Pam's.

And his return in the finale was awesome as well.

Jim says goodbye to Michael

Also, this might be the hardest I laughed at the show in its initial run:

Michael says goodbye to Oscar

And Dwight's wedding:

Michael, I can't believe you came.
