I think he is a decent actor, but no amongst the elites.

I loved his movies, but most legendary actors of that era are not on par with many top tier actors of the last couple decades.

I guess well have to agree to disagree then. To me he's one of the greatest all time and way better than most actors the last couple decades. I actually don't think much at all of the current generation of actors.

And no "great" actor has EVER had less range than John Wayne.

Cagney was a far greater actor than Humphrey Bogart. He made him look like a statue whenever the two actors were in scenes together. His versatility is also unmatched. He could do Shakespeare, play gangster roles, sing and dance in musicals, do comedies, etc.... When you watch his movies, he feels like a modern actor while everybody else's acting style feels dated.

Which again is not a required for somebody to be a great actor. You just have to be great at the thing it is you are doing.

I agree, just adding a name to a point that has been made.

See: Campbell, Bruce

Ok, another name I'm not scared to throw out: Heath Ledger.

Modern actors are dated too. Everything has a date. I watch current movies and they feel current, in ten years they wont. 80s movies feel like 80s movies. 60s movies feel like 60s movies, etc.

You have to view movies in the prism in which the time they were made and not always compare them to the present. For the present quickly becomes the past.

I like him in most of his movies but I don't think I've been blown away by any of his performances.

DiCaprio gets a lot of hate by some because of his Titanic fame, but the dude is arguably the best actor of his generation. he's up there and he is intelligent enough to weed out all of the bullshite roles.

His best performances (in my opinion) -

- What's Eating Gilbert Grape - (Oscar Nomination Worthy)

- Catch Me If You Can

- The Aviator - (Oscar Win Worthy and IMO his best performance)

- The Departed - (Oscar Nomination Worthy)

- Blood Diamond - (Great performance, but thought he was better in The Departed that year)

- Revolutionary Road - (should have at least received a Golden Globes nomination)

- Shutter Island - (he single handedly made this movie watchable)

- J. Edgar - (Oscar Win Worthy, although the film itself was 3 star out of 5 at best)

Yes and I'm confused about John Ford as a gruff cowboy? I mean I know he has a few acting credits to his name in the silent era but I thought he was known more as a director?

Wow, total brainfart tonight. Terrible. John Wayne. Haha

Maybe if you said the last 10 years but in the last 20: Glengarry Glen Ross Carlito's Way Heat Donnie Brasco The Devil's Advocate The Insider

Maybe 20 yrs is stretching it, but i'm not crazy about any of those movies. GGR is a good movie but the most memorable line/character for me was Baldwin's.

CW, DB are Scarface light....

Devil's advocate was laughable (even not taking Keanu Reeves in to account)

Heat and The INsider I cannot remember ATM.......

People hold him to be ONE of the GOAT's and I find him monotonous and lacking range.

Awesome early work. Legendary even. Poor later career.

That's pretty much the truth. My favorite was his English accent in Dangerous Liaisons

He does have the best "Woah!" over anyone on the face of the Earth though.

Tom Cruise ... Do people know that he wears lifts in his shoes in some of his movies because he is a borderline midget? Terrible actor.

funny story. a friend of mine was an extra for "Collateral" several years ago (which although I'm not a fan of Cruise, that was a badass movie) .... anyways he was fortunate enough to film a couple of scenes very close to Cruise and Jamie Foxx although he didn't have any speaking parts. he said that at times he was able to get within just a couple of feet of Tom Cruise and said that he was much shorter than he could have ever imagined and was looking down on him. my friend, who is maybe 5'8 with boots on estimated that Cruise is no taller than 5'5 at best.

I see they list him at 5'7 on IMDB and other sites, but you know damn well he is wearing 3 or 4 inch lifts in his shoes when he is out in public.

Or perhaps you have a bad memory and/or are overly critical?

perhaps

I really loved Pacino's early work. I have been consistently disapointed with him later work.

Well you're opinion isn't wrong nobody's is since taste is subjective.

And sometimes I think I'm too underly critical.

I agree.

White Heat
Yankee Doodle Dandy

There's someone who could switch genres. Cagney as "overrated" is a huge WTF.
