One reason for this is that the kids on the middle have been consistently awesome from day one.
Not so for Modern Family. Manny, Luke and Lily are horrible - they ruin every single scene they are in.

It definitely the only other successful lower middle class sitcom of our generation besides Roseanne. Malcolm in the Middle was decent, but not nearly as successful.
Modern Family is witty and extremely well written. The Middle has much better actors and frankly more likeable characters. Even Frankie who is a less than average mother and a shitty employee isn't completely annoying.
