It hit some high points but it missed quite a few.
We are, lets say, shooting for a trilogy. In this movie your main villain is off page for most of the script or Darth Bieber.
It failed to set up the villains as a credible threat. Darth Bieber was thumped his first time out of the chute. Captain Phasma, your secondary villain, was stuffed in a garbage chute without a fight.
The big bad of the first movie was, as much as it pains me to say this, the riot control stormtrooper who stomped a mud hole in Finn and walked it dry.
The personal stakes are too low going into the next movie. Darth Bieber will win the next fight but... well... he's a turd. The First Order loses its luster when its main antagonist (on screen) is a dead storm trooper.
Vader was one of greatest villains in screen history because he was introduced as the biggest bad arse in the galaxy. The sort of character that Samuel Jackson yearns to play. And Vader played that role right up until the end of the third movie.
The problem this movie has is that its Vader, the Dragon from TV Tropes, is... well... a turd. R2D2 could bend him over and have a go at him.
Yes, he is a morally complex character. Who is a turd. Now in the next movie, well he will win the fight and be a real bad arse... but the moment is lost. He's just some arsehole. When your villain is stormtrooper X then you've shite the bed.

reconditioning
He was obviously not reconditioned. I took it as he didn't report to her division as she told him to at all. Or maybe there was some sort of debriefing where it was determined that he needed to be reconditioned, but he was never reconditioned. That's when he decided to go free Poe and escape.

The good: It didn't suck as bad as 1 or 2. It's probably on par with 3.
The bad: It still kinda sucked.
What were you banned for?

Go rewatch the original. People don't seem to respect Vader all that much in that one. They're afraid of him, sure, but they completely backtalk Vader. Leia calls him a dog to his master Tarkin and one Admiral smarts off to Vader. I think the subordinates are much more fearful of Kylo Ren in this than they were of Vader in the original. It's not until Empire where Vader becomes terrifying and iconic. I expect the same from Kylo.

I think it's head and shoulders better than any prequel along with Jedi, but it's a pretty big gap between the first 2 and the force awakens

Not that I give two shits if they ban me again, but as a general policy, stay the frick away when LSU loses

I've learned that one before. My drunken, anti-Miles/Peveto rant got me banned for a few months.
As for TFA, I agree that the references were way over the top. I also thought a lot of the humor was corny and forced, and the space monsters in Han's hold did not belong in a SW movie. I really don't know what the hell that was all about.
The villains were all weak. Condescending fanboys claim that I don't get why Kylo is such a bitch. I get it. I just think it's stupid, and he's ugly as shite and a bad actor to boot. There has to be a truly sinister and powerful, ever-present main villain. The heroes are lessened without one. Snoke is supposed to fill this role, but his appearances are intermittent and he's almost comically goofy looking (though not as bad as Ren).
The board shite all over me for predicting months before that Carrie Fisher would be at best distracting, because of all the botox and surgeries. I even said she sounded like Bruce Jenner and shouldn't be in it, and lo and behold, I was right. It was really off-putting. Cue the hate parade.
She did redeem herself in an interview, in which she lamented her bad choices in life and said the comments "hurt all three of my feelings" (
), but it didn't do the movie any good.
I was called a racist for not liking the goofy Finn character, but who's the real racist here? JJ is a sellout SJW super-crusader, but he creates a black character (whom he admitted was a 100% affirmative action call), but makes him the plucky comic relief. "Droid please" was fricking cringe-worthy and patronizing.
Why can't "the greatest pilot in the galaxy" be the black guy? Why does he have to be Will Smith in ID4? Also, jewish Poe gives him his name, like fricking Friday in Robinson Crusoe. How condescending is that? But, I'm sure he'll hook up with the white girl, which will be a 100% natural plot point and not a political statement at all - so that should make everything okay.
I fully expect to see homos in this trilogy at some point. JJ and Disney were a horrible choice for this.

I figured it wasn't your cup of tea especially considering the heavy handed way Abrams had to constantly remind us the protagonist is a female as if she isn't a total smoke show

I think Abrams was a fine choice for a soft reboot, but I've felt since watching dawn of the planet of the apes that Matt reeves has the perfect sensibility for a sci fi fantasy adventure movie.
Colin trevorrow will make an awful Star Wars movie. I have no doubt.
