In case no one has mentioned it, the drunk bit was not only an act, it wasn't even original.
After breaking up w/Jerry Lewis Dean felt he need a new persona, especially for night club appearances. So somebody decided to take the drunk schtick of standup comedian Joe E. Lewis (portrayed by Frank Sinatra in the movie The Joker Is Wild) and adapt it for Dean.
