Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television Entertainment have closed a deal to turn Stephen King’s mammoth novel series The Dark Tower into a feature film trilogy and a network TV series, both of which will be creatively steered by the Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code.

Ron Howard has committed to direct the initial feature film, as well as the first season of the TV series that will follow in close proximity. Akiva Goldsman will write the film, and the first season of the TV series. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer will produce, with Goldsman and the author.

When Deadline revealed in April that Howard, Goldman and Grazer planned to team with King, Universal was battling Warner Bros—home of Goldsman’s Weed Road--for the property. The multi-platform deal was so comprehensive, it took months to close. It will be announced later today by Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson, co-chairman Donna Langley, NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin, and NBC & Universal Media Studios Primetime Entertainment president Angela Bromstad, all of whom pulled it together.

I'll watch it, regardless of whether it's crap or not, but I reeeeeeeally hope it's not crap. Interested to see who they cast as Roland. It's crucial they get that right.

Roland will be crucial.

I'm curious if they'll follow the storyline or try to go in chronological order of the storyline.

They need to not half arse this. I want to see LOTR quality with this one. Clint Eastwood could still do Roland IMO. Don't care how old he is.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I thought there was already a Dark Tower TV series try like a year or two ago. No?

I think there have been a few minor attempts but certainly nothing as firm as the current one.

Just seems like I remember seeing promos for it on TV a while back. Might have been something else though...pretty sure it was SK-related though.

Interested to see how they will bring together the trilogy and the TV series. It will take that much tiem to tell the story though. I will be interested to see who is cast as Roland's crew as well.

I doubt we get more than 2 movies and one season of tv. Stinkin NBC never gives things time to develop.

Plus this source material does not translate well for network tv. Cable, yes, but not network. It will be butchered to appease the network censors and the movies will probably be toned down to PG or PG-13 so they fall in line with the series.

I'm excited to see some movement on the property but mortified at the prospects of NBC having anything to do with it.

Does NBC have to keep it PG13? They can choose not, too. AMC is probably going all out with "The Walking Dead". Maybe if that one is a success NBC will go all out with this one, which is what the story deserves.

I cant see the link, so are the tv series and the movies going to be intertwined? Same actors and everything?

I would assume so.

Move - seasons 1, then movie, season 2 will be the format so they would have to have the same actors.

i was just wondering, because isnt the series like 7-8 books? it seems like an awful lot of content for just 3 movies. you would have to intertwine the 2. I guess i need to check these books out

This is a cool format. This may be something used more in the future for such large source material.

it's a good series.

I don't think this will end well, however. just too much material and I just don't think they can do it justice on the small screen. But We'll see.

With Ron Howard, I just hope he doesn't get Tom Hanks to play Roland

I doubt it will be a big name, seeing as they will have to do tv as well.

Without having read the books, how would Nathan Fillion fit the role?

I have all of the audiobooks downloaded, i just never listened to them.

I always thought the only way to do this would be CGI...we'll see how they pull it off with actors. A lot to live up to but I will look forward to it.
