One of my favorite movies. Great cast of characters. My one issue is that Celie's children (Olivia and Adam) get adopted by the minister and his wife. Eventually they move to Africa with Celie's sister Nettie who is also looking out for the children. However in the last scene, Celie meets her now grown children and they don't speak English. Maybe they know it, but they keep talking to her in some African language and Nettie is translating. It's just odd to me.

I'm probably the only one, but it's always bothered me.

My wife was almost 5 when her family fled Vietnam. She was fully fluent (speaking wise, she was just learning to read) in Vietnamese and no one in her family spoke English when she arrived here. Her parents totally immersed her into English. She now understands spoken Vietnamese, however, she can only speak it at a somewhat "toddler" level - which means she never speaks it. So, I can understand believe the situation you describe in The Color Purple as accurate.

Interesting time in Spielberg’s life. He emerged relatively unscathed by The Twilight Zone (1983) helicopter accident, but he admitted he matured a whole lot after that experience, and The Color Purple was his first big drama.

Nowadays, I feel like Spielberg is more known for his dramatic movies than for his summer blockbusters. But in 1985 it must have been a huge curveball for him to make such a somber movie.

It was. Lots of folks didn't know what to make of the development.

TCP may be the only Spielberg flick where John Williams didn't compose the score.

The Color Purple is a nearly perfect movie. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards and inexplicably won none. Top 3 Spielberg movie for me along with Schindler's and Jaws.

TCP was the first break since 1974, but as Williams approaches 90, it happened again with 2018's Ready Player One (Alan Silvestri) and will again for Steven's imminent remake of West Side Story (David Newman adapting Bernstein).

So, the nearly half-century partnership might have ended with 2017's The Post. But, I do see some "Untitled Indiana Jones project" floating around with Williams' name attached. Maybe that is legacy music, but interesting nonetheless.

Great great movie

The last scene never bothered me, but the Adam character definitely sounds like a true African sounding individual, not just the language. Adams wife and Olivia don’t seem to have his same inflection

Great observation which never made any sense to me as well. The Minister his late wife and Nettie would be the closest to Adam and Olivia and they all spoke English. I could see them picking up language and culture like the little girl who taught Olivia the ropes but they should be able to speak and understand English.
