It's also why his name is not well known at all--just no desire for attention

A gentlemen's name should only appear in the paper three times: when he's born, when he's married, and when he dies.

Looking forward to watching this one. Just about finished 14 peaks today. Incredibly impressive what that guy I assumed achieved. K2 was the most impressive out of all 14.

I haven't watched 14 Peaks yet, but it's in my queue. Another doc in my queue is Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey, on Amazon Prime and PlutoTV. I've never heard of this guy, but he sounds like a character.

Fred was frickin' legend. He was a pure old-school dirt bag. I met him a couple of times in the '90s in the Cascades.

He was a born fence jumper and route stealer.

You climbed Everest right? Was summiting similar to the pic Nima posted where there is a massive queue?

Yes, mid-90s (any more specific and I could easily dox myself). No, while it was in the early commercial guide days there were less than 20 climbers making a summit attempt on my summit day so maybe 35 climbers (including Sherpa) total above Camp 4. Lost a total of maybe 10 minutes going each way on the Hillary step otherwise there was no traffic to speak of. It will likely never be that way again.

Free Solo and The Dawn Wall

Haven’t watched The Alpinist yet but the Dawn Wall was so addictive that after I watched it I fell into this genre and watched free solo next, then a few others. I lost interest quickly because none of the climbing docs I’ve seen were as good as the first 2 I saw, Free Solo and The Dawn Wall.

Still looking for what would be the third best film in the climbing doc genre so I’ll have to check this one out since it keeps getting recommended to me on Netflix.

They are going to be hard to beat given their production value. Two more you should consider are Dirtbag (mentioned above) and Valley Uprising. Both of them are very rooted in the early climbing ethos which is not subtly different from the modern era and ethos of climbing. A great movie that looks at the more modern era is Meru where you get to see Jimmy Chin climbing instead of being behind the camera along with Conrad Anker who is a legend. The final suggestion would be Touching the Void. I think Dirtbag, Valley Uprising, Touching the Void and Meru are all on Amazon.

If you want to get a good window into rock climbing in general The Reel Rocks series on Redbull.com (there is also an app on Roku and I assume most other media players) is excellent I suggest starting with #14. If you want to get a little more into the minds of climbers Fine Lines on Amazon takes you there.

Reel Rock 14 is the only one I've seen, and it's fantastic. It should make Who_Dat_Tiger happy since it features Alex and Tommy working together. Plus the climbers vs coal miners story is very cool.

Thought it was great. It is crazy how he could move from ice faces to rock faces different times through the climbs. changing shoes at different points so he could climb those different faces. Also really like Free Solo and Dawn Wall. These people are incredible athletes.

Yes, mid-90s

Was just watching the documentary about the accident on Everest in May of 96’.

Did you know anyone who was on the mountain that year?
