Nolan is starting to slide into that “filmmaker who acts like he’s a senior in film school trying to impress his professor” territory. Just tell the damn story. Quit trying to impress us with your non-linear chronology. It’s tired, it’s not profound. And for God’s sake, go back to your “Sound in Film” semester and review.

you see, Nolan seems to be moving away from "the story" more and more. his story and characters start to have little value other than kind of justifying his next visually stunning set piece. Tenet kind of took this to an extreme that people didn't like. the characters, pacing, editing, dialogue, sound mixing, etc. were all just way too Nolan-ized. then add in a tricky subject (time travel) and execute it with a philosophy of not giving a frick about character/story, and you get overly confusing vomit

the problem with Tenet isn't that it's a jumbled mess of confusion, it's that Nolan intentionally meant to create a piece of pop art that can't be consumed easily, and the problem with the response is that it pretends that there is some artistic merit behind this obfuscation (which is how modern/abstract art gets away with it) when there is only some "pew pew pew boom" behind it

Nolan has become an ironic form of Michael Bay. nobody wants a pretentious Michael Bay. the reason why Michael Bay has had so much success is that he rejects pretention and gives easily-digestible movies that have lots of "pew pew pew boom", and that's fine. he knows he's not trying to reinvent anything.

Here’s my review on Tenet:

Movies are made to mostly entertain an audience. I was entertained.

+1 I never thought I'd say this, but Warner Bros needs to rein him in. His movies need studio interference
