I just watched Taps again for the first time in a very long time. Such an awesome movie. Five stars. The cast is amazing too. Sean Penn's debut movie.

Property developers want to tear down a military academy and build a housing project. The cadets do what they can to protect the academy.

Sean Penn
Timothy Hutton
Tom Cruise
George C. Scott
Ronny Cox
Giancarlo Esposito

I watched that movie in the theater when it was released. I was a teenager and went with my cousin and we loved it. He loved it so much he joined the Marines at 17, right out of high school.

One of my favorite movies.

It’s at the top of the list of movies that I force my kid to watch that he hasn’t watched yet.

One of the best movies ever.

Period.

No weak actors/characters in this masterpiece.

Scott is perfect for his character. Hutton is excellent.

I’m always surprised how few people have seen this film.

And thank your cousin for his service.

Mine too. I enjoyed it today just as much as I did in 1981. If I had children, they would watch it on loop mode.

I agree. Great scene.

There was a dollar theater near my house back then. When it showed up there, I think I watched it there at least five more times.

I feel like this was always on tv Sunday afternoons when I was a kid. Along with bloodsport, breakfast club, real genius and gotcha. All goats.

Loved this movie. But I always felt somewhat manipulated by the writers. Illogical resolution of the conflict.

Another good movie that came out about that time dealing with a military school was the Lords of Discipline. Pretty intense movie.

Just noticed Gus Fring from Breaking Bad is one of the main characters, one of the cadet officers.

Lords of Discipline was an excellent read - Pat Conroy was a good author and many of his books were based on personnel experience

Pretty much the only scene I remember. The rest of the movie is a discourse in angst and teenagers thinking they know better than adults and that what is happening to them is the most important thing in the world.

Sort of Lord of the Flies at a military school.

Timothy Hutton sort of made a career of this..."nobody understands me" silent struggle guy through life...rebelling, searching for answers, lost soul kinda guy.

Taps
Ordinary People
Beautiful Girls
Turk 182
Falcon and the Snowman

They did a lot of boarding school movies in the first half of the 80's, for some reason. Taps, Lords, Private School (greatest opening credits song OAT), Class, Up the Academy, Making the Grade and probably some others I'm forgetting.
