You may have seen my posts reveling in an earlier Dallas rewatch. What a jewel.

Trying this one out now. Another one that was part of the weekly viewing in the living room growing up for at least a number of years where I recall the premise and characters but not much detail.

ETA:

quote:

Aired on NBC in prime-time from January 15, 1981 to May 12, 1987, for 146 episodes, in the Thursday time slot.

Hill Street Blues employed what was, at that time, a unique style of camera usage for weeknight television productions, such as filming close in with action cuts rapidly between stories. Rather than studio (floor) cameras, handhelds were used to enhance this style.[4] Overheard, off-screen dialogue aurally-augmented the "documentary" feel with respect to the filmed action of a scene.

So far pretty damn good. Many of the actors are very much larger than life types, or maybe that’s my adolescent memory kicking in.

I was born in the late 70s and this is the one show I remember my mother watching incessantly.

It's one of the most influential TV series of all time.

It brought the serial format, previously confined to soaps like Peyton Place and Dallas, to cop shows and by extension other genres.

As a result ensemble casts became more common, replacing the '70s star vehicles named after the hero: Kojak, Columbo, Rockford, Baretta, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc

Groundbreaking GOAT. Starts to fall off at the end, but a truly amazing series.

One of the best tv shows of all time. I have re-watched all episodes at least twice.

I don’t have a problem with you watching this but, just be careful out there.

Hill Street and then St. Elsewhere, back when you had truly "appointment TV". Wore out a lot of VHS tapes making sure I'd recorded Hill Street Blues.

It was so "gritty and real" at the time, but now it's kind of quaint next to the brutal stuff we've gotten since. I didn't remember the characters being so broad. Still a great watch and great nostalgia.

Probably the grandfather of the modern drama. Toyed with serial story lines (almost unheard of in a non-soap opera of the time). It was also very gritty for a television cop show of the era, which up to that time had been generally light (Jack Webb had been the dominant force in that space).

I think the combination of excellent writing, directing and acting and gritty vibe predicted the revolution led by HBO 20 years later.

St. Elsewhere

May hit that one next.

I wonder how someone that was not a kid in the late 70s/early 80s would view it now? Is the urban decay/grit feeling still there? Or does it just look old?

I don't know if urban decay is a genre, but it should be, especially late 70s/early 80s urban decay.

I bet an LA Law rewatch would be quaint and hilarious.

Definitely do. We didn't watch Hill Street Blues in my house growing up, but St Elsewhere was one of my mom's favorite shows. I recently re-watched the first season, and it has held up very well. Great cast as well.

I might have to do a Dallas rewatch. JR's one liners are worth it
