Where the hell am I supposed to start. I just read three Han Solo trilogy and thought they were fun reads. I figured I could get into the Star Wars thing and then realized there's about a thousand books. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

TIA

It takes place a few years after ROTJ and was the first series written in the expanded universe. Pretty much started EU.

So I don't need to go back and read the books that take place like 30,000 years before the Luke and Han and them came along?

Start with the Thrawn Trilogy.

Then read either the Jedi Academy trilogy or Shadows of the Empire. Squeeze in the Truce at Bakura.

That'll give you good background for the EU. You can't really go wrong afterwards. I'd make sure you read the stuff written before the New Jedi order series first. I'm a big fan of the Stackpole XWing books, not so much the Alliston ones.

Can't help you with that, I've only read 4 of the recent ones: The Thrawn Trilogy and Shadow of the Empire which takes place between ESB and ROTJ. All of those are really good.

Thawn trilogy is the must read. It is where the movies should have gone.

Death Star, Shadows of the Empire and Darth Vader are all decent for filling in storylines.

Should I stick to certain authors? Do their stories not coincide or do they try to work off of each other?

They all coincide with each other, but the novels weren't written in chronological order, so it's not essential that you read them in such until you get to the New Jedi Order series.

The XWing books are set immediately after Jedi and deal with the Liberation of Coruscant.

If you remember in ANH, Tarkin said the regional governors had power with the dissolution of the Senate. There were a lot of nefarious characters thT weren't in a hurry to give up power. The empire didn't die at the Battle of Endor.

Like everybody else has said, Thrawn trilogy.

The new Jedi order series is really good too. It's a series of like 15 books

makes for a good story to say the bad guys are dead, war is over, but in reality it would take a massive infrastructure to run a galactic empire, there would be several people that supported the government, even citizens.
