Srgt. Doakes discussion (Obvious SPOILERS)

I'm starting another Dexter rewatch. The last four seasons get hated on alot, but this is one of my all time favorite shows.
It pisses me off that they always kill the best character on the show, but it's how the show had to go. I really wish Brian and Doakes would've been around longer they were both awesome characters, but Brian is a discussion for another thread.
On to Sergeant Doakes.
He was an awesome character that got absolutely shafted.
Black Ops Army Ranger
Decorated Detective
Perfect Police Instincts
Is there a better cop with a worse end than Srgt. Doakes?
He's the only one who knew Dexter's secret, he's the best cop on the force, he's the real reason the dumbest bitch cop was promoted to Lieutenant, not to mention his war record and black ops mission success.
Then he gets fricking shafted by a crazy chick, blown up, and labeled as the bay harbor butcher.
That has always pissed me off about this show.

SPOILERS***********
I dont ever remember being as bummed about a character death as I was when Doakes died. Not only did he know Dexter's secret, but he brought some levity to a lot of the scenes he was in. I thought they could have stretched his character out a bit farther than just one season or however long he was on it

I feel like I was just forced to try everything at the buffet instead of just getting the one dish I wanted.
But of course he would get screwed over. Dexter is inheriently a villain. Doakes, being a straight edge and morally sound person, became the antagonist. So he would die. He is the Ned of GoT.

Two seasons. But I agree with you.
His death was brutal and it sucked.

Yeah it was definitely an "are you kidding me moment."

He absolutely is. He fricks everyone's life up that he's a part of.
But Doakes's should've been on the show longer. He was just an awesome character. I wanted to see him in more episodes.

That's a really good way to put feelings about the show. Solid analogy.

Been a long long time since I watched season 2, but I couldn't believe someone with Doakes' experience went after the Bay Harbor Butcher all alone, with no one else seeing his evidence or believing in him.

Again, it's like Ned. The nature of his character bucked the system too much too soon. His end was in his nature.

I hated Doakes. If he is such a badass, why is he dead? He went out like a punk and was framed for all the murders. Doesn't sound like such a great detective to me.

I felt the same way. For those reasons, I knew the end was near for him, and he'd make an uncharacteristically easy victim.

I only watched Dexter one time all the way through several years ago. I am having trouble remembering how Dexter made Doakes's death fit within his code. Was Doakes just an outlier who Dexter killed purely out of self-preservation?

I'm obviously going to have to rewatch

Everyone loves season 4 but I thought doakes and the inspector made season 2 the best. There was such a sense of them being on to dexter that added more suspense to the season as a whole imo.

Well Doakes was a wild card and IIRC was suspended at the time.
He wasn't the most stable person himself and remember that Doakes basically murdered that guy he recognized in season 1.

He just straight up gunned down an unarmed Haitian dude and planted a gun on him.

I've said all along that Season 2 was the best. The later seasons turned Dexter from a quirky, weird, funny, grinning psycho into a sad sack with a bad habit. Season 4 was good, and I found Season 3 very strong on a rewatch.
To leave everyone with a Doakes quote, "Stop grinning like a fricking psycho and get back to work."

****Book Spoilers***
I only read the first 4 or 5 of the novels (author made a stupid mistake in the third one and tried to crawfish away from it in subsequent books), but anyway, Doakes gets pretty fricked up by Dexter's target in the second novel, tortured and whatnot. Pretty sure he was still alive by the time I quit reading them, though.
