I was hoping you would have asked about a Tiger I fighting the Americans in the battle, as there were none on the American sector at the time and Lehr only had 3 operational when it transferred to the front and those 3 may not have moved with the division to the Normandy front.
As posted the Americans and British forces were trying to keep the bridges intact for later use.

Incorrect. The Allies were actively blowing bridges along the Merderet River to prevent German counterattacks. As the movie says, the 82nd Airborne took out all but two of the bridges along the river.

The operational plan for the 82nd Airborne was to capture the crossings over the Merderet River at the tiny hamlets of La Fiére and Chef-du Pont.
Here are the operational objectives:
The 505th would take the important crossroads town of Ste. Mére-Eglise and the eastern ends of two crucial crossings over the Merderet River at Chef-du-Pont and La Fiére. The 507th would seize the western end of La Fiére at the village of Cauquigny, and the 508th would secure crossings over the Douve River at the southwestern end of the drop zone.

Ya, I have all the division historian's books.
I just didn't recall them being mentioned in the movie.

The events in the movie are based on the battle at La Fiere bridge on June 6th.
The 100th panzer replacement battalion is attacking towards La Fiere from the west with French Hotchkiss H 39, Renault R-35 and a Panzer III.
Here is a good article on the battle:

I have read three books on this battle.

How did Private Ryan have a flashback to a time in the story where he was not present?

Madness! Madness, Colonel Bogey!!!

Script quotes:
According to their movie, they were supposed to keep the bridge safe.

We missed our drop zone by 20 miles, ended up by Bumville or some damn place. We were coming here to the rally point, ran into a colonel who was gathering up men - to go to, uh...Ramelle... - Ramelle. Babysitting a bridge.

It's been a long time since I saw the movie, but I do understand military objectives. Blowing all but two (or a few or whatever) bridges allows easier control of any access junctions. Having only two bridges left means having only two bridges to take control of without worrying about the Germans flanking them by crossing another bridge. Remember, the Allies weren't in retreat. Complete scorched earth policy makes no sense when they're advancing.

Their orders say nothing about holding the town
You should probably watch again. Their orders were absolutely to hold that bridge.

I'll tell you why... bc some full bird decided he wanted that bridge intact. So you grab a few guys and you go sit and watch that fricking bridge until ordered to do otherwise. This isn't some kind of goddamned democracy... it's the United States military.

The movie was not a flashback in Private Ryan's mind. The way they filmed it made it appear that way on first blush.
