I enjoy the movies and want to pick up the books someday. My main problem was I never really thought Harry was that bad arse. Hermione did a lot more shite than he did.

Gotta read the books. The movies are fun to watch, but they pale in comparison

As this kid grows up, the plots get darker right?
Definitely, although I'd say the third one is debatably the best film of the bunch.

I remember being a third grader and pissed off at some things the first movie just ignored about the book.

This is what I can't figure out. I still can't figure out what these kids do once they're "educated". Maybe I'm just thinking about this too much.
Despite being magically educated, I agree that they're overwhelmingly uneducated in basic things that would still be essential to their world. Things like accounting, marketing, and engineering.
I think a sequel series (not involving Harry) set in America where Muggles find out about the Wizarding World and wage war on them would be great. It would be great to capitalize on how much the Wizarding World fricks up on basic things, and it could be great.

The target audience is the same age of the characters. Which made it great that the first book came out when I was about 8, and the last movie came out right after I graduated high school
I was Harry's age when I read the first one, and then I grew up with it completely. I was 19 when the last one came out, and it was great.

The first was too literal. I think the first two were the least inspired of the films. I think HBP is the worst of them, but I think they at least tried something different with it.

All 7 books will take you 2 weeks to read.

Sad thing is that HBP is the my favorite book in the series, but the movie blows. I have seen all eight movies, but have only ever rewatched the first 3. The books get longer and have more detail after that and they completely butcher the matirial to fit it all in. Plus they keep marketing the movies more towards the kiddies after that instead of letting the tone age with the characters like the books. Best example of this is the 5th movie. OoTP is a much darker book than the movie.

I read the whole series twice, I actually watched DHpt2 last night because I was bored!
I could probably pick up the books and read them all again. If only time allowed.

Aw hell, don't be overly dramatic. The movies aren't that different than the books. Hell, book 7 is almost completely transcribed to film.

I was very fortunate to have a math tutor who was also a librarian at one of the local schools. She was plugged into the literary world somehow and was able to tell me about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone just before its release in the United States in 1998. I was 10 or 11 years old at this time. So...I kind of grew up with Harry as the books were released. Harry Potter was my teenage years and thus will always hold a special place in my heart.

Whoa... It took me a lot longer than that. Thats averaging done in 2 days per book.
These books were fun. My wife hates fantasy type stuff and loved HP series.
I thought the casting for the movies was great. The first Dumbledore was much better than the second. I know... the actor died.
Just like LOTR, the movie interpretation of the books will always contradict with the readers view at some point.
I wish Rowling would have been more involved with the movies.
Fav book was HBP. She took you into Voldemorts world and gave the whole thing legs. The perfect set up for the climax of the series.

Until the end that is, when it completely shite the bed. It was almost a perfect adaptation until that point.

These are the questions answered in the books.
quote:One of my problems also. To piggyback on this, the Ministry of Magic has to be one of the most corrupt, tyrannical, dysfunctional govts in the western hemisphere...even before Voldemort crept in.
2. Dumbeldore is the most manipulative person ever. and uses harry for his own purposes all the time. he sucks.

Seriously, it has to be. They didn't even give Sirius a trial. Pretty fricked up there.

They tell Harry he is expelled and they are going to snap his wand without a clue of what is going on, but they allow magical families to "self regulate".

Overly dramatic? The books are better than the films. And the films leave many details out, especially pertaining to the intricacies of the wizarding world and the history.
The DH1 was exactly like the book. It was great. DH2 was the same way until the end, where like OML said "it shite the bed". They ruined the ending of the movie by changing it from the book.

the movies do a pretty good job of screwing up harry's most bad arse moments. In the books, he is actually a good wizard and probably the best in his year excluding hermione

I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending, but the final fight ended way too quickly in the book. Not good for film.
Spoilers
And don't get me started on Harry not fixing his own wand before snapping the elder wand
