So I finally watched Martyrs (2008) last night

For those who don't know, Martyrs is supposed to be the apex of French Extremity both in terms of the movie itself and the gore. The way the internet talks about Martyrs is that it's supposed to be the most intense/painful movie that's an actual movie (so no Serbian Film, 2010 Pig, The Bunny Game, etc.).
It's not really my genre and it wasn't easy to find, but last night I was scrolling on Shudder and they have a new French section and it's a lot of the big French Extremity Movies (additionally Frontiers, Inside, etc.). So I said frick it and put it on.
I have to say that while it is definitely painful to watch, it really was a lot less gory than I though it would be. I won't get into spoilers but a lot of the stuff I had been led to believe was shown explicitly was done off camera, where the person inflicting the injury was shown doing it, but the actual action was off camera.
It's an interesting movie with a very dark, nihilistic ending, but one of the best ambiguous endings in film.
Also, do not watch the American version of this movie. It's supposed to be legit terrible.

I'm not, that's why I never have seen it until last night. It's been on my radar for over 10 years but I never pulled the trigger.
Extreme cinema interests me greatly but it's not something I particularly like, kind of like how I love conspiracy theories as a concept/phenomenon but don't really believe in many of them. Martyrs was a good enough movie to justify watching. I'll likely never watch a Human Centipede movie or A Serbian Film or August Underground, etc. b/c they're simply too shitty of movies to justify the other stuff.

I didn’t find Martyrs to be that disturbing but Laugier’s Incident in a Ghostland fricked me up for a little while after watching.

A Serbian Film is highly disturbing but at the same time very well made ... and I have a hard time reconciling those two sometimes. I almost want to watch it again for HOW it's filmed/acted/written/etc., but can't bring myself to experience the content again.
I’ve always said about the same thing. ASF is actually a pretty well-made film, if you can get past some of the subject matter (which obviously is difficult to do).
Martyrs was pretty good. I don’t remember if I saw the American or the French version, but I agree about the ending and it was different. It wasn’t as “bad” as I was expecting it to be in terms of gore, so I kinda agree with SFP on that aspect as well.

yeah, I think several of us watched and discussed A Serbian Film after SlowFlo or someone started a thread about it here. Felt compelled to watch it all the way to the end, but have never had the slightest impulse to rewatch.
