Star Wars: The Last Jedi wasn’t the movie that Chinese audiences were looking for. The science-fiction sequel tanked in China, following up a disappointing $28.7 million debut with one of the worst second-weekend declines the Chinese box office had ever seen.

After a 92% drop in its second weekend, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has already been pulled from Chinese theaters. To kick the movie while it was down, it came in second that weekend to the third film in a sexist domestic romantic-comedy series, The Ex-File 3: The Return of the Exes.

And I just saw an ad for TLJ, reminding me that tickets are still available. I think maybe reality has finally set in for them, that the series is in a little bit of trouble going forward.

Interesting to see what they will do with Rian at this point

And had her kiss a black dude. I'm sure the Chinese loved that.

Chinese don't like women in positions of power.

It's screwy to them. Makes no sense.

Chinese audiences don't like black people.

Chinese audiences really don't like black people macking on Asian chicks.

Worst attempt ever at trying to attract the Chinese male audience. Disney is fricking dumb with this movie. One of their worst attempts ever at making money.

I suspect they edited that out for China.

They double down over the next few months but look for signals as they start filming Episode IX.

The proposed Rian trilogy will be quietly shelved and, in fact, will be denied to have ever been a thing or just dismissed as internet rumors if it is brought up again.

Episode IX will start to get pumped up a return to classic Star Wars, a movie that "will remind you why you fell in love with the franchise" or "a fitting end to the trilogy and a love letter/thank you to the fans that have made Star Wars a global phenomenon over the past 40 plus years" or something along those lines.

They won't make a public spectacle of shitcanning him but they will send cues out showing that they received the memo and will be taking the franchise back in a more "traditional" direction.

Or...they release Episode VIII: The (New) Director's Cut next year, which will be an entirely different movie.

You might be right, though it would be pretty hypocritical of them if they did.

True.

Only thing worse would be if they made her Japanese...kissing a Chinese dude.

How did Wonder Woman do 90 Mill in China?

(Thor: Rag did 112 Mill, Spidey: Homecoming did 116 Mill)

This is why I’m not sure if Rose was there only for the Chinese audience. She’s not Chinese and kisses a black guy.

I’d like to know if that part was edited out

None of that will happen.

They will double down on their current course.

Everyone who hated this movie will continue to be wrong in the eyes of Disney.

The next movie will continue the course.

This is Disney we are talking about here.

I think Abrams will give an honest attempt to pull the franchise out of the ditch with Episode IX. Who knows if it will work though.

Yep. Kathleen Kennedy doesn't own Disney and 500 million bucks lost is still 500 million bucks.
