Andy was sentenced in the 40s. Especially in smaller towns, commercial bankers actually had gravitas and cachet back then.

As it was a drainage pipe and not a water supply pipe, the one in the prison may have also been terra cotta, which was used for drainage during construction up into the 1950s. Stuff is very brittle:
