It’s like these studios are trying to remove what makes these franchises unique, to cater to the general population, which is having the opposite effect. The people who found and enjoyed these shows, did so organically.
Turning everything into generic sci-fi show is ruining modern entertainment..
It's called "competitive convergence," and it doesn't just happen in pop culture. It happens in all industries as the end phase of capitalism is reached and a few megacorporations come to dominate the market. They all compete to appeal to the broadest consumer segment possible, and if one of them tries something that gains them a little market share, the others will quickly emulate it. It's why all new cars look more or less the same, it's why mainstream pop music all sounds the same, it's why college football is being shifted to be less regional and more like the NFL, and it's why modern blockbuster movies are all the same. Products created to appeal to more niche consumer interests are left to smaller companies - until one of those companies happens to produce something that catches the eye of the mainstream consumer, at which point it will be purchased by one of the megacorporations. But from there it will be subjected to the process of competitive convergence, which will slowly erase whatever made it interesting to the niche consumer in the first place in favor of appealing to the broadest consumer segment possible. This is what is happening with Marvel, Star Wars, and LotR and, one day down the road when someone finally makes GW an offer they can't refuse, will eventually happen to Warhammer 40K.

Suicide Squad is great! We should do a Star Trek show just like that!

Robert Meyer Burnett, no stranger to Star Trek himself, puts it kindly. ( or not ) He's directed, edited and produced multiple projects, from feature films to DVD extras for such movies as Fellowship of the Rings and The Two Towers.
