the U.S. government caught up with him and arrested him (I forget exactly how - I think he was arrested by customs in some allied country

He went on the radio in the Phillipines ON THE DAY OF 9/11, celebrating the attack, saying the USA got what it deserved. Clearly, he was still upset that the US had effectively banished him. He started in on the US and the jews more after his storage unit was repossessed. He had a lot of memorabilia (which he claimed was worth "billions") and possessions that basically went to a bidder. He went on radio in the Phillipines several times to rail about intl. politics, his stolen legacy and the USA.

Oddly, the people who bought his stuff sold it and used the funds to start the language learning program "Rosetta Stone."

He also claimed that the randomized version of chess was his invention, which he called "Fischer Random," a system that gives both sides an equal, but randomly selected configuration of pieces on both sides of the board. He felt that the game itself was played out, and that this was now the only challenging way to play it.

Oh, and pics of the Polger sisters. Dude.

I'm not a cryer, but it got a little dusty for this one. Amazing movie.

If you don't get emotional in the final 25 minutes or so, after the mom kicks Kingsley out and Josh returns to the park to play with Fishburn and the bums and then throughout the finale and last scene of the dad watching his supremely gifted kid walk off with his buddy, just being a normal 7yr old, then the human condition just ain't for you.

I particularly like the park scenes.

Fischer should have doubtless won a few more world championships, but I think Anatoly Karpov would have bagged him sooner or later. Karpov was an excellent world champion who pushed Kasparov to the wall on multiple occasions.

One of the best screenplays I've ever read. You like reading scripts, it's a must read.

I don't recall him being arrested in Iceland or dying in prison

I know this thread is days old but just now had time to respond.

Yes, Fischer was indeed arrested in the 00's. He spent quite a bit of time in jail (months, maybe even a year or two).

I was wrong about him dying in prison. Here's an article from chessbase:

quote:

Bobby Fischer was suffering from degenerative renal (kidney) failure. This had been a problem for some years, but became acute in October, when Fischer was admitted to hospital for stationary treatment. He stayed there for about seven weeks, being released in a somewhat improved condition in the middle of November 2007. In the middle of January his condition deteriorated and he was returned to hospital, where elevated levels of serum creatinine in his blood stream caused his death on January 17 2008.

Fischer stayed in an appartment in the same building as his closest friend and spokesman, Garðar (Gardar) Sverrisson, whose wife Krisín happens to be a nurse and looked after the terminally ill patient. Gardar's two children, especially his son, were very close to Bobby. They were his only close friends and contacts during the last two years of his life.

It's true. He did invent random chess. Sometimes it's called Fischer Random, but it's also called "Chess960" because there's 960 possible random starting positions.

Fischer said he hated the modern game because it was too predictable and everyone was scared to lose, so they drew every match. He hated the idea of opening books, hence Chess960. There is no book. You're "out of book" from move one.

Josh Waitzkin has also led super interesting life, if you've never researched him. He's been on Tim Ferriss a few times and is just a fascinating person who has gone on to all kinds of other successful endeavors.
