Two episodes on Prime. It's a mix of Mythbusters (ballistic gel tests of musket rounds on flesh and bone, etc.) walking the grounds, firing cannon with no ear pro, etc. Decent amount of humor involved.
But, what stands out is he reads diary entries from low level soldiers in his very on point voice. I get the impression from how some of the readings went, he wasn't aware of the content ahead of time, as they caught his emotional (for a Brit) reaction a couple of times.

Wasn’t there a Sci-fi channel show that the entire premise/marketing was basically that Sean Beane wasn’t gonna die in this one

I think this is the documentary because he was in Sharp's rifles which was a good book series but the cheesy TV mini series was laughable at moments
