Who makes better mindbending blockbusters?

Is it the director who gave us FIGHT CLUB, THE GAME, SEVEN, AND ZODIAC? Or the one who gave us us MEMENTO, INCEPTION, INTERSTELLAR, AND THE UPCOMING TENET?

OK, fanboys, we’re getting ready to dodge and duck and block your furious comments as we pit favorites Christopher Nolan and David Fincher against each other in our second director-focused episode of VS. Who is the better mind-bending auteur: The man who delivered the big WTFs with Memento and redefined the superhero movie with the Dark Knight Trilogy? Or the man who laid Mark Zuckerberg out on the table in one of the smartest and most enjoyable dramas of the last 20 years – and also gave us the iconic Fight Club? We’re comparing their performance on the Tomatometer and at the box office, and looking at their characters and biggest moments to decide who comes out on top of the modern directors’ heap.

Yes

Those movies you can watch over and over again.

The Dark Knight Trilogy doesn't count because the question was mind-bending.

Interstellar and Memento aren't, oh that's on, have to watch that again.

Nolan made Dunkirk. That's gotta torpedo his chance at winning.

Fincher has 2 films better than Nolan's best in Memento.

And outside of Memento/Prestige, if you made a collective Top 10, nearly every other Fincher film comes out on top of every other Nolan film.

Fincher by a good bit.

Fincher is a better film maker but I don't want to rewatch his movies. Nolan has put out many of my favorite movies from the past 20 years. They are just more fun to me.

Fincher is grittier, Nolan is more polished. I love both, but I think Fincher is more technically proficient while Nolan is a more complete storyteller.

I disagree. I think despite Nolan usually going after more high concept plots and scripts, Fincher is much better at telling his story than Nolan is.

A lot of the time, the plot or idea of a Nolan movie is better than its execution, can’t say the same for fincher.

Nolan has never sniffed anything as polished as Zodiac.

But in all seriousness, polished is not how I would describe the 2 Nolan films that really work: Memento and The Prestige. There's an almost literal embrace of the messy.

Love both, but I go with Fincher too. Both have many quality films, but Fincher has more diversity so I give him the edge.

I’ll take Fincher (probably my favorite current director) , but anyone who chimes in to say either is “way better” or “it’s not close” is wrong imo

Gotta love the "if you don't share my opinion you're a hipster douche bag, even though by saying this I'm announcing myself the only douche bag here" crowd.

It is honestly very close. Both of their filmographies are excellent and both have made movies that have impacted the American pop culture zeitgeist. The main difference is that Nolan is great at making blockbusters and Fincher is better at making technical masterpieces. David Fincher is the only director that should ever be compared to Kubrick, his attention to detail in storytelling beats every single director in Hollywood today. I love both to death but I give the edge to David Fincher.
