Damn... and we were just talking about him ( here? ) not long ago. He was 85... he'll be missed. Bigly.

Charles Grodin is 86 today. on TD M/TV Board

Our excitement for Charles' 86th birthday feels kind of like a "Let's not all start sucking each others dicks quite yet" moment now.

RIP Mr. Grodin.

Always liked his appearances on Carson. He was among a few actors who seemed to look the same for many decades. Gene Hackman Morgan Freeman were like that to.

On Letterman too. I was watching a clip last week when he was on Carson. Johnny was giving him grief for charging so much for the hard back edition of his book

He was the first choice to play the lead role in the Graduate and was offered the part but turned it down, despite a lot of people pleading with him that it would be a big movie and make him a star.

I think he was the kind of guy who preferred his niche roles or quirky supporting characters as opposed to being an A-lister.

He auditioned for the role, as did almost every other young actor in Hollywood.

Wikipedia quotes Grodin as claiming he turned the role down (at a time when the only work he could get was supporting parts in TV westerns). I take these "I-turned-down-a-great-role-when-I-was-unknown" stories with a grain of salt (Walter Matthau was notorious for them).

One such story that is indeed true is actor John Kerr declining to play Charles Lindbergh in Billy Wilder's biopic The Spirit Of St. Louis, b/c he opposed Lindbergh's politics. This made national headlines and got Kerr a lot of negative publicity (this was before the mainstream media became 100% anti-Lindbergh) and probably hampered his career.

Letterman had respect for celebrities who put an effort into their appearances. Grodin, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray... these were huge stars and they'd show up with ideas and were game to make their appearances into something out of the ordinary. Letterman couldn't understand how a young celebrity could show up and just sit and wait to answer questions.

Grodin showing up on Letterman with his attorney was classic.
