Blood of Heroes. Rutger Hauer at his finest.

What are the top 3 most realistic post- apocalyptic movies?

Never been in a post-apocalyptic world.

I cannot answer this question honestly.

And Mad Max is not post-apocalyptic. The sequels are.

No. How is it possible for all the life on earth to die off other than humans?

Seriously? Get enough dust in the atmosphere and photosynthesis ends as does plant life. The whole food chain then collapses. Meanwhile humans are living on canned food. The few other surviving life forms do not know how to use can openers.

I'll still say On the Beach is more realistic than anything else proposed, though the Road is not a bad pick at all.

Not all non-human life in The Road is dead. A beetle and dog appear in the film.

It's never really shown what the apocalyptic event in The Road was, but I believe one theory was that it was a gamma-ray burst. I have not read the book, but I think that it might be implied in the book as well. Here is an excerpt from the link:
quote:

For example, if WR 104 were to hit Earth with a burst of 10 seconds duration, its gamma rays could deplete about 25 percent of the world's ozone layer. This would result in mass extinction, food chain depletion, and starvation. The side of Earth facing the GRB would receive potentially lethal radiation exposure, which can cause radiation sickness in the short term, and in the long term result in serious impacts to life due to ozone layer depletion.[91]
quote:

Longer-term, gamma ray energy may cause chemical reactions involving oxygen and nitrogen molecules which may create nitrogen oxide then nitrogen dioxide gas, causing photochemical smog. The GRB may produce enough of the gas to cover the sky and darken it. Gas would prevent sunlight from reaching Earth's surface, producing a cosmic winter effect, and may even further deplete the ozone layer, thus exposing the whole of the Earth to all types of cosmic radiation.[91]
That would explain all the fire/radiation and the loss of plant and animal life. Also it would explain why Viggo died of what looked like cancer and his son was fine.

Cannibalism is going to be one of the biggest concerns in a post-apocalyptic world. Both The Road and The Book of Eli succeeded in this aspect.

I lean toward a meteor impact event. It also explains what you listed.

I tend to believe that as well. Way too much dust to be explained by a gamma-ray burst. Nukes are possible as well and also a super volcano on the scale that formed Yellowstone would be pretty catastrophic. I kind of like the fact that it is left to the reader's/viewer's imagination.

Most realistic,

The Road
The Day After
On the Beach

I love this genre of movies,

Book of Eli, I am Legend, Omega Man are just a couple that come to mind.

The Day After

No shite. Forgot all about it. Good call

The Stand.

Much more the book than the made-for mass consumption movie. Molly Ringwald for Christ's sweet sake.
