Question about ratings and DVR's. Do shows that you record count towards

ratings? I rarely actually watch a show when it first airs. The cancellations thread got me wondering this.

I'm sure that someone can provide a full, correct answer and I'm sure it can be found by googling, but my understanding is that TIVO/DVRs report the number of recordings and viewings and that if you view a program within a certain period of time (like 48 hours) it counds towards the ratings.

Don't ratings get generated on the viewing habits of only a sample of households in the country, or have we finally moved past the Nielson ratings?

I'm not sure if anything is automatically reported. We actually were a ratings house for a couple of weeks. Where DVR was concerned, we had to write down when we recorded it and when we finally watched it. We only did it for a couple of weeks, so I guess if you don't watch it fairly soon after recording it, it isn't counted.

Having had a few shows I liked be cancelled over the last few years, I read up on it a bit.
I'm almost certain that they don't include DVR viewings for the "ratings" that everyone reports or you hear about. However, I do believe there is a another rating that includes the shows recorded and watched within 7 days (IIRC) which some argue is the better ratings number these days.

They probably can't use DVR towards ratings that determine advertising sales figures.

What you watch doesn't count toward any ratings. Unless you have a Nielsen box or fill out viewing logs and send them to Nielsen.

The only conclusion I have come to regarding television ratings is that the Nielson families have incredibly bad taste in television.

As a person who is in the Nielsen program, I asked this question and was told that there is a sliding scale of the ratings impact depending on how long you wait to watch a DVR'd program. If you watch it live, that has the biggest impact.

exactly. ratings are only used to give a figure that the stations use to determine how much to charge for commercial air-time
a DVR'd show is still a viewing, but knowing that the commercials are more likely to be fast-forwarded through when recorded it will still "count" somewhat but isn't weighted the same as a live viewing
but yea, unless you have a box or fill out logs nothing you do even matters
