Are we - as viewers of both shows - being shown finished episodes of the documentary as seen by the fictitious national audiences inside the show OR are we seeing a quasi-curated sneak peek at raw footage filmed for those documentaries?

Pretty sure it’s intended to be raw footage.

We are sort of the real time audience for a documentary that is to be aired at a later date if that makes any sense.

I think "the documentary" was only a few episodes as they mentioned in the last couple episodes. We got 9 seasons...

Also, are we to believe that everything we saw was through the lense of the camera or was it only viewed that way and written into the story when convenient.

Similar to parks and rec with the cutaways and interviews.

For example. The final episode was outside the documentary filming. How are we seeing it?

Are you serious?

Yes, we are getting the PBS footage of the show. That’s why we see Pam going to the Camera mans house, Jim’s BBQ, and Pam and Jim spending the night at Dwights. That’s definitely PBS audience footage

It was bonus content for the DVDs. Either Dwight said this or someone off screen said it to Dwight.

Jim’s BBQ,
How does us seeing an offsite Jim's BBQ prove one way or the other what the perspective is supposed to be?

I'm actually unclear what you are saying - you are saying it's obvious that it's finished versions of the documentary shown to the national audience inside the show?

I don't remember that, but anyway - the question still stands for the UK version, which is only 13 episodes in total.

Well, Parks and Rec and Modern Family clearly just use the mockumentary device as a quasi-4th wall-breaking narrative tool.

The Office, however, is supposed to be actually captured by a doc crew.

This thread hasn't helped me to a better understanding at all.

The mockumentary format fell apart within a few seasons of the US version imo. It was just a sitcom at that point.

Yeah, that's fair(ish) I guess. They obviously still at least nominally tried to represent that it was a doc.

But even so - my question would stand for the first few seasons: what exactly are we seeing?

A damn funny show.

There are so many flaws with the filming of this show as it pertains to being a documentary that it's really not worth discussing. You will find no good answers.

For example, the camera angles they get from an interaction between two characters, with different points of view, in real time, without seeing the other cameras or boom mic operators are literally impossible.

But the show is still damn funny, which is really all that matters.

Yeah, this seems right to me. Perhaps the question is better asked only of the UK version.
