But I say that as someone who was legitimately very surprised when he was revealed in the book so that was a big highlight for me so I'm personally glad I read it first.
Same. I listened to the audiobook, and tbh I was not totally invested in the stoy at first. One of the reasons is that astrophage is quite the sci-fi lover's fantasy. Astrophage unlocks the idea of interstellar travel but the characterstics of it is insane and I wasn't buying into it. But I was blown away by his discovery of another ship and then an alien being, and from there I was totally invested in the story.
I am re-listening to the audiobook right now in preparation for the movie, and I am right at the point where he sees an object that had to be constructed, it could not have formed naturally. "It's a terrible design for a pressure vessel. No human would have designed this!" (paraphrasing)

Agreed, it was kind of weak but still OK
The girl character was pretty cringe

Read it. It’s a very fun and easy read. I think I enjoyed the Martian a bit more. But not an incredibly noticeable amount more. Weir definitely has a style.
Ok, so I finally decided to start the book over the weekend, and I just finished it a little while ago. Loved it.
He definitely has a style and I like it for sure. As I said, I don’t normally enjoy fiction too much but something about the way he writes and structures a story, I really dig it. And I found myself wanting to keep reading a little more and a little more so I just ended up powering through it in like five days (by far the fastest I’ve ever read a book
Overall, I liked The Martian more (only one of two books I’ve ever read twice). And I wasn’t crazy about how this one ended. But PHM was really, really good and I’m glad I read it before the movie came out. I’m interested to see how they handle certain scenes in the movie. And now I can be all snobby about the movie and be like “eh, the book was better.”

The buzz this is getting following its early screenings is freaking insane. Like real, serious, spectacular buzz that does not seem like bullshite.
