Anyone else a fan of this movie?
Keifer Sutherland, Colin Farrell, and Forrest Whitaker, great combo of actors. Short, quick, thriller..Loved that it was set in real time.
It's release was delayed with the D.C. sniper attacks happening right when it was about to come out. Perfect timing.
Never realized that Jim Carrey was originally cast to be Stu, that would have been a trip.

Underrated. Sutherland had the perfect voice for the role.

I’m always a fan of one setting movies. I like the one room/building, etc. types.

Very entertaining for the time it was released. Would it be as succesfull today?...doubt it. CGI and remakes have monopolized hollywood. Maybe a studio like A24 could pull off something similar. Get Jordan Peele involved and you might have something.
Glad it ended up being Farrell instead of Carrey. IIRC Stu's character was a bit full of himself and I think Farrell can pull that persona off way better than Carrey. Carrey's past work would have made it hard to see him in a role like this.

Not a chance. Straight to streaming service if it was released today. Which is a shame.

We should dive deep on these. Phone Booth, Buried, Panic Room, The Room, Inside Man, 10 Cloverfield Lane, ...

I wouldn’t put Inside man in the category. There’s a ton of different settings the plot takes place at

I was thinking the same thing, but I think it's safe to at least call it a hybrid. The meat of the movie is definitely all one setting. It's one of my favorite movies and really put Clive Owen higher on my list of actors to watch. Him plus Denzel is a fire one two combo.

Don’t forget
Rope - 1948
12 Angry Men - 1957
Reservoir Dogs - 1992
Clerks - 1994
The Breakfast Club - 1985
There’s literally dozens of big movies that used only one location (save for a few other scenes).

Was Empire Records all in one setting (the music shop)? If so, that's another great one setting 90s film. Early day Liv Tyler too!
We're thread jacking the OP, but if someone wants to take lead on creating a thread about one setting movies, I'd continue discussions.

Idk I feel like if you’re gonna fit in that category, it’s going to be very obvious and very much a choice by the director to do so.
Inside man is still structured very traditionally. Even inside the bank there are multiple settings within.
I think there’s a difference between that and basically making a “bottle episode” movie like Panic Room, Locke, or Buried with Ryen Reynolds
I agree it’s a great movie, and such a fun movie to rewatch.

John Q, yes.

I mean to be fair, a movie about a phone booth in 2021 would be weird as frick
This movie came out possibly the last year it would’ve made any sense for it to come out and have the plot be set in the same era
ETA also this kind of movie isn’t the kind being squeezed out. Something this cheap could easily get made today. It’s the middle class budgeted movies that are hard to make now. Studios would rather either take the low risk high pay out options like horror or indie A24 type movies, or go all out on a tentpole with higher risk and much much higher reward

Without looking it up I think the writer of Phone Booth wrote Cellular as a follow up movie that was meant to be the inverse story of Phone Booth. Instead of stuck in one place, the random protagonist has to go all over the city. Cellular is kind of a cheesy movie but I’ve always had a guilty pleasure for it.
