I like the show..seems a little put on at times.
I'd be curious if the oldest son, supposed owner, would be 1/10th as nice without the camera's on..

Thought it was a really stupid idea, but now I love it. Always interesting to see what comes in the door on a given day.

The only problem I have with it is it is on the frickin' HISTORY CHANNEL and its not history. But at least its not Monstquest or How the Earth Was Made.

I can't believe how stupid some of the people who come in there are. Consequently, the owners BS the hell outta them.
"Yeah, I've got this gem mint graded 10 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card..."
"I'll give ya $100"
"No, it's worth $25,000"
"You don't understand I've got to resell it and make a profit. I'll go $150.
"OK, it's a deal"

I used to go in that pawn shop when I was young. It's downtown where a lot of locals go to gamble. These people need money to get back to their slot machine and will take what they can get. Granted they don't show that on the show.

It's legit. They have some interesting items exchanged in that store, and Chun Lee (sp?) makes me laugh. The owner seems like a cool dude too.

Well, FWIW, they do do that sometimes. The plane was the best example of this.

Only because the guy selling it knew exactly what he had on hand. It was some mysterious item that he had no clue about, he was an aviation nut. The pawn shop guy was just trying to figure out if it was viable to flip it.

Also the stagecoach chest was the coolest thing in a while.

i like the show a lot

and while some of the customers are fools for letting something go way low, i kind of understand their thinking.

if you have a painting thats worth 10K, the only way youll get 10K is to go through some high end auction, pay fees, and probably pay someone to handle the auction process for you. in the end, you arent getting 10K.

you sell it to the pawn shop guys for less than 10K, but its absolutely no hassle and you walk out with cash money...so i do understand the thought process, although if i had something that they were really lowballing me on, and i didnt have to put any money/work into getting it fixed, i think i would go the auction route myself

Maybe I'm naive but if you're in the hot air balloon business and you have an extra hot air balloon laying around wouldn't you sell it to a hot air balloon club or hot air balloon dealer or a hot air balloon collector and not to a freaking pawn shop? This show just gets more contrived and scripted by the week.

Austin “Chumlee” Russell

Where did Chumlee get his nickname? Friends in elementary school took the name from cartoon character Tennessee Tuxedo’s sidekick, a walrus named Chumley.

All in all it seems like they only profit 20-25% over all.
They may low ball on the purchase but I never see them sell the items. I'm sure the big items they show for TV has a bit more profit though.

I like the fact of the show that it is like a "less gay" antiques road show, in that we learn about these old items and how much they are worth.

i do not like the forced reality show concept with the "Old Man" getting pissed and the infighting amoung the staff. If I wanted to watch people bicker and argue I would turn off the T.V. and talk to my family for fricks sake.

That chest was pretty damn cool, but I thought they determined it was dated even earlier and was treasure chest off a ship. Either way, that was the best item I have seen in the 8-10 episodes that I've watched.

I am curious how sharp the owner actually is about some of this stuff. It is obviously scripted material as I doubt he is instantly familiar with the value of dinosaur teeth (as they showed in one episode), but you still have to pick up a pretty good knowledge about miscellaneous stuff when running a pawn shop.

My biggest problem would be that I would have to keep have the stuff for myself, especially after they refurbish it an make it look new.

that chest was cool. When the guy gave it a price he said something like 8 grand (was under 10 grand) but the screen displayed a figure of 60grand plus. I just can't figure out why some of these folks sell this stuff to pawn shops. Crack heads yes, regular folks no.

I've passed by it before. It's on Las Vegas Blvd, just past the north end of the Strip, near Fremont Street and the Downtown area. It's in, shall we say, a rather colorful part of town.
