So overrated. I've watched this movie twice now, and there is nothing special about her performance.

Agreed. Loved the movie, but Ethan Hawke's performance was the only laudable one, IMO.

Why was it laughable?

I'm shocked that Lego Movie was snubbed off the list, but I personally think HTTYD 2 is the most deserving of animated films.

Big Hero 6 was fantastic, far better IMHO than HTTYD2 or even Lego Movie. Disney/Marvel is doing great things.

I think Birdman will clean up the awards.
Anybody else dislike the ending to Birdman?
I don't think I got Birdman, in general. The whole time I was watching, I felt like there was meant to be a higher level of understanding - some deeper meaning. But I just didn't get it. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, honestly.

This best actress list hews fairly closely to expectations. The biggest surprise is Marion Cotillard’s nomination. She edged out Jennifer Aniston, who was thought to have a shot for her buzzy performance in “Cake.”

Jennifer Aniston wouldn't be the best actress in any random High School play. Maybe if she showed what she's got the good Karma from that might equal a nomination, but we will never know.

My thoughts exactly. Everyone said it was so good and i just didn't get it. also, why was it nominated for comedy/musical at the golden globes? I thought it was a drama after watching.
Overall, I just want Grand Budapest to clean up. Wes Anderson really did an awesome job with that film

Gone Girl is a great movie and one of my favorites of the year, but it's not really Best Picture material IMO. I wouldn't consider it a snub.

Agreed. It was well made and entertaining, but at the end of the day, it was an adaptation of some pulp book primarily written for chicks. I don't really consider thrillers, especially of that vein, Oscar-type of movies.

Very bigoted of you. Anyone with an opinion different from yours is surely a redneck, right?

Shut the frick up, all your pals here were shitting all over the movie -which none of you had ever seen-because it dealt with black history and trying to discredit it because of that. Nevermind that it's been universally praised by critics AND self-described conservatives on here who actually saw it. Nice try.

When did they increase the best picture category from 5 to 10? That's lame.

I saw that this was the 2nd time in 20 years that all the actor nominees were white or something..like 2 times in 20 years is 'a lot.' More black actors and actresses are winning now than ever, so all that uproar is bullshite. I do get annoyed when people assume a movie is overrated/crap without having seen it on the basis of its subject matter, hence my attitude towards Selma.

All and all I would say this is a pretty weak field this year with some real head scratchers. How in the world did Jake Gyllenhaal get snubbed? I thought his performance in Nightcrawler was far and away the best I saw this year. Also, Gone Girl should have gotten more noms. I have no problem with Birdman getting so many nominations as it was a tremendous film. I am a huge Robert Duvall fan but I just don't see his performance in The Judge being worthy of a nomination. However, I don't really know who to put in his place. I'm probably in the minority here, but do we have to nominate Meryl Streep anytime she craps something out? To be honest, I'm getting pretty burned out on her. Finally, how does The Boxtrolls make the list and not Lego Movie? That's really perplexing.

Site started out so good. It's been all downhill since.

ETA: They're whining about DuVernay not being nominated. Wow.

Selma is a fine movie and all, and an especially good directorial debut. But let's not get carried away. Usually one must have a respectable body of work before getting that award. Before whining, Grantland et al., give J.C. Chandor a call.

Just finished the whole article on Grantland. What a load of horse shite. There are Oscar snubs every year. It has nothing whatsoever to do with race, nationality, gender, or anything else. Look at the history of the Academy. Hell, just within the past 5 years, Best Director has gone to Mexican, Taiwanese, French, and British males and an American female. When people purposefully and unnecessarily inject race into every aspect of life, it does a lot more harm than good to race relations. Best Picture last year was a movie about slavery for goodness sake.

I'm surprised how little Interstellar is on this list. Nolan usually does well at the Oscars.
