I had always heard this was a good book, but I never have time to read anymore. By most accounts, its scale was always too difficult to capture in a movie. Large-scale series may be making more of these things possible.
Anyway, I thought this was a well produced, well shot show. The scenery was beautiful, and you can tell that the set design was important. Thought the primary roles were well-acted and I hope this does well enough to finish the story, because I’m invested. The early episodes had some very memorable long takes, which are always cool to me.
Eta: apparently, the conditions that the Marquez estate required with the rights were that it be made in Colombia starring Colombians. The foreign language may keep this from performing as well as it should.

Anybody else watch this? Was it fairly close to the book?
From what I’ve found, there’s no release date for part 2, but it has already been filmed. No way that Netflix wouldn’t release, right? I know that Hollywood is full of scoundrels, but I feel like Netflix is more desperate for content.

I watched it. I thought it was fantastic. Truly memorable

I probably watched that long take with the ghost in the first episode about 10 times. So well shot. There were a few long takes, if I recall. Seemed to taper off a little after investment in the characters, though.

The second part of the story (the war/revolution stuff) was not as interesting to me as the first part but the whole thing was so well done. I read that Marquez intended the book to be an allegory about the founding and development of Colombia as a place that eventually embraced dictators, so I get why he wrote the book as he did but I personally didn’t enjoy that part of the story as much. But what a story and what a limited series!

Oh man, I thought the Colonel was the most dynamic character of the first half. Loved watching him change from quiet, awkward artist to cut throat freedom fighter. Great allegory for the ravages of war.

I loved the early parts covering the founding of Macondo and the development of the town. I loved when the Gypsies would come to town each year, and the friendship between Jose Arcadio Buendia and Melquiades. And I loved the magical realism interspersed throughout the story. Rebeca comes to live with the Buendia family and brings a bag with the bones of her parents with her. The bag of bones moves every time she places it on the ground because, of course, the dead are always with us. And when Melquiades the Gypsy comes back from the dead because he couldn't get used to the solitude of being dead.
And the opening line of the miniseries is also the opening line of the book and it's one of my favorite opening lines in literature:

I didn't know they made a series on it. It's been many years since I read the book, but I'll give it a shot. I was watching Encanto a while back and it reminding me to re-read 100 Years, which I never did. I remember it being a difficult read for me. A lot to keep track of and lots of names not in my language.

Yes, I assumed there was a dubbed version. Dubbing bothers me, so I don't use it.

I get that. But it's really not that bad

I'm only on episode 2 of season 1. But I appreciate you pointing out this show.
