Seems to me that the showrunner has to decide what he's going to do with Rick. He started out being the glue that kept everything together and he has fallen like a rock. They've tried the crazy routine with visions of Lorie; they tried the passive farmer bit at the prison; they now have his son treating him like he's his bitch. That's a high cliff Rick has fallen from. He either dies here soon or they need to find who stole his testicles and get them back.

It's the natural progression of the character.
He hasn't figured out what type of man he is supposed to be in the apocalypse.

Badass Rick kind of came back when he killed the bad guy in the bathroom.
And while I have no problem with offing Beth, the problem with the BBQued Beth theory is that she ain't got much meat to her.
Oh, and I don't think Mary has the same sweater as Beth--looking at images of them both online, Mary's had a kind of Aztec pattern to it and Beth's looks more like a ribbed pattern.
