if people want to break avengers off into a different group-set than TDK or 1st Class, then that's ok. but what is its competition?
I don't think it has any comic-book peer.
To me, it has the same satisfying pay-off that I got from Empire Strikes Back, a pure summer blockbuster movie from a totally different genre that I can watch repeatedly without tiring.
Both are driven by intensely likable but established characters and both movies soar with incredible CGI-candy action & well-placed humor. Both are devoid of any deeper social comment, and neither try to steer away from its respective genre. Both also attempt some character development/background with the relatively new guys (ScarJo/Haweye & Yoda/Lando)
I don't think I can equate the dramatic moments of Agent Coulson's death to Luke's failed test or Daddy Darth's Maury moment, which the latter appeared more intense. However, while Star Wars' main characters appear more vunerable in ESB, ScarJo's brilliantly acted vulnerable-ness (in response to Loki's biting tongue) was arguably reminiscent of Lecter's high-powered perception used to dissect Clarice in Silence of The Lambs .
Much like you can't compare Empire Strikes Back to a more serious/deeper sci-fi film like 2001, I don't think you can compare The Avengers to TDK or the X-Men franchise, despite being from the Superhero genre. IMO, they stand alone and stand out.

Cap: There's only one God, and he doesn't dress like that.
One of the people I saw the movie with made a comment about that line. Typical

One line from the movie that I thought would get a ration of shite on the internets: Cap: There's only one God, and he doesn't dress like that.
They balanced it with Hulk saying, "Puny God."
(Which my evangelical Athiest friend was quick to blast out through social media.)

SPOILER:
Agent Coulson's death didn't really register with me. I was too busy watching it as a plot device. As he was stabbed, I was thinking, "What's Whedon going to do with this" and then we had Coulson actually spelling out the plot device as he died.

That was so Whedon.
You never know how Whendon is going to make you laugh, and it comes when you don't expect it.

I will say this, comic book geeks will think this is the greatest thing ever to walk the face of the Earth.
I think it's hilarious when people feel the need to distance themselves from liking the movie too much, as they still suffer from the delusion of sports are awesome, and comic books/video games makes you a lame geek/nerd.

let me say this
the comparison conversations in this thread end up with "comic book nerds" trying to differentiate this movie from superior movies based on comic characters like the dark night/batman begins and x-men first class
so the segregation works BOTH ways

Thor you handle Loki
Iron Man you take care of them as they come through the portal.
Hawkeye you take a perch up there and keep an eye on the portal.
Black Widow you're down here with me.
And Hulk...... SMASH!
Almost got it, Hawkeye take a perch and keep an eye on their movements and patterns.

Stark was just fly fast and shoot. Even he deferred to Rodgers.
100%.. he was actually the one when everyone was gathered that said something like "You're up Cap" or "What's next Cap?"

No he's the villain's mouthpiece basically.
He, the blonde waitress with the yellow apron, and the guy who played Thanos have all been in past Whedon projects.

For some reason I thought it was really funny when Captain got the flying monkey reference and was so excited about it.
No doubt, I laughed out loud at that.. must have a certain sense of humor though because there wasn't nearly as much laughter at that compared to some of the jokes/physical humor.

That's the perfect way to be when dealing with political issues and sports and the like.
When dealing with art forms, you are doing a disservice to yourself and the piece by removing emotion from something that is designed to evoke some.
Having fun in a theater is an emotion that a person needs to consider when judging a movie.
The Avengers was fun for me. I enjoyed having a good time. TDK was not fun. It was rather boring in my view.
but what do I know. I'm just letting my emotions get the better of me, apparently.
