Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on a plane to J.P (The Big Bopper) Richardson because teh bopr had the flu. It was the same plane that crashed and killed Buddy Holly and Ritchi Valens.
AND when Buddy Holly jokingly called him "dumb" for giving up his seat, Jennings said "well, I hope your plane crashes".

He sang one of the most iconic songs ever -"Teenage Runaway"- and never had another hit I believe.
He had other several other hits, he was the first American to cover a Beatles song ("From Me To You" in 1963 --BEFORE the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show in Feb1964) and he is in the R&R HOF. Not a bad career.

But he went into his garage one morning, turned his car on and never turned it off
He was killed by a self-inflicted rifle shot while on Prozac.
His wife sued the manufacturer but the case was thrown out.

Holly's guitarist Tommy Allsup was guaranteed a seat on the plane (Holly was paying for it) but 17 year old Ritchie Valens nagged and nagged him so much to flip a coin for the seat that Allsup finally gave in. Allsup lost, and Valens won a seat on the plane.
IIRC this scene is in the movie La Bamba.

Bob Crane, Hogan from the TV show Hogan's Heroes.
He was into filming a bunch of kinky sex stuff at his house. he ended up being beaten to death with a camera tripod and I don't think they ever found out who did it.

Most observers of the case believe it was Crane's longtime friend John Carpenter (NOT the director), who was indicted for the murder some 15 years after it took place. Much important evidence had been lost in the long interim and Carpenter was acquitted. He died a few years later.
See the movie Auto Focus w/ Greg Kinnear as Crane and Willem DeFoe as Carpenter.

Made a movie about it so once again, interesting but not unknown, especially given his popularity when he died.
Dude was a total perv though.

So, is the focus on whether the person was not well known or the death?

I must totaly be mixing up a couple of different deaths into one story. I swear I remember Lewis Grizzard doing a column on Shannon where he described how he died.
