I'm sure the same group of people that thought the "Beavis and Butthead" and "Ren & Stimpy" revivals were good ideas but didn't watch them will also not watch this one.

Fist off Beavis and Butthead revival was funny.

Second it was a season revival.

Third the Rocko's Modern Life revival is a movie.

Fourth not everyone who watched Nickelodeon watched MTV. Different audiences.

Sitting here watching it with the kid tonight and it just dawned me that I recognized Skip's voice, it's fricking Mark Hammil!!!

Who knew that the Joker and Luke fricking Skywalker was Skips?!?! Mind blowing, what a talented voice actor.

Just had an epiphany that should have been obvious earlier, but it's become clear to me that Spongebob Squarepants is a super shitty ripoff of Rocko's Modern Life, and it ruined cartoons as a whole. Rocko took risks and there was never a cartoon like it before. All the characters were great, and had real struggles. That was what the show was about: struggling in the modern world after being reluctantly thrust into it.

Spongebob though is mostly shite. Yeah, it has funny moments, but it plays it safe. Seriously compare the characters. Rocko to Spongebob. Hefer to Patrick. Mr. Bighead to Squidward. In Rocko's show they feel like real people, while they don't in Spongebob. They're simply caricatures. Aside from Really, Really Big Man, I felt all those people could exist in the real world, just in wacky situations.

Rocko was totally ballsy, while Spongebob never even close to touched the line that Rocko made for it. It's just they're idiots and Squidward suffers through it. That's it. I don't think Spongebob touched the hilarity that was Hefer. Really he was adopted by wolves to be butchered and eaten, and he thinks that the lines they drew on him with a sharpie to carve him up were his birth marks. And when they decide to raise him, Rocko unknowingly breaks the very obvious news to him what happened. That is dark and fricking hilarious.

Agreed, that's how I recognized him. It was a time travel episode and he was doing young Skips (Walks as he was called before he changed his name), and he slipped into his Joker voice. It was a pretty cool realization, I got excited and Mrs P and little P couldn't give a shite less.

I don't know about that, from what I remember Rocko always felt like a Kevin Smith type character, just a slacker kinda finding his way through life. SpongeBob was much more cartoonish, which is kinda your point I guess, but I never felt like SpongeBob had a struggle. I just don't see the parallel, but it's been awhile.

That's exactly my point on why it's better. Spongebob took the Rocko formula, but gave us a character with no struggles and no stakes. And it wasn't as ballsy. It's a much weaker version of the story with no balls. Really the cartoons in the 00s sucked save for Avatar. It took Adventure Time to take it out of the ghetto, and I blame that on Spongebob.

I don't think I can provide a good counter argument tonight, I've been drinking. But I do agree that SpongeBob is an inferior show, I disagree that it's the same formula. And to suggest such is to either diminish Rocco's awesomeness or to elevate SpongeBob to a level it's undeserving of.
